THE INVISIBLE BATTLE

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8

The Christian life is not a playground; it is a battleground. The apostle Peter does not tell us merely to be comfortable, confident, or careless. He tells us to “be sober” and “be vigilant.” We are to be self-controlled, spiritually awake, watchful, and constantly dependent upon God. Why? Because we have an adversary, “the devil.” Satan is not a figure of mythology. He is a real and relentless enemy whose purpose is the destruction of souls.

Christ said,
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

There are therefore two opposing purposes presented before us. Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Christ comes that we “might have life,” and have it “more abundantly.”The great controversy is therefore not imaginary. It is a real conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan-a conflict that reaches into the life, mind, character, and eternal destiny of every human being.

We are warned:
"Satan watches eagerly to find Christians off their guard. O that the followers of Christ would remember that eternal vigilance is the price of eternal life!" RH August 11, 1903, Art. A, par. 19

That warning introduces the burden of this study: We cannot afford spiritual carelessness. The enemy is watching for opportunities. Therefore the Christian must watch-not in fear, but in faith; not in his own strength, but in the strength of Christ.

THE BATTLE IS GREATER THAN WHAT WE SEE

The Bible takes us behind the visible circumstances of life and reveals an invisible conflict. John saw the great controversy represented symbolically in heaven:

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels.” Revelation 12:7

The conflict that began in heaven did not end there. When Satan was cast out, the earth became the special theatre of this controversy. Therefore John declares:

“Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” Revelation 12:12

Notice the reason for Satan's intensified activity: “He knoweth that he hath but a short time.” The closer we come to the final conflict, the more determined the enemy becomes. This means that the Christian cannot afford to regard the conflict as merely theological, historical, or future. We are living in the battlefield now.

WHO ARE WE REALLY FIGHTING?

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12

This is one of the most important texts for understanding the subject of this study. Paul says: “We wrestle.” A wrestling match involves close conflict. It requires resistance, endurance, and alertness. But notice what he says we are not wrestling against: “Not against flesh and blood.” Our ultimate enemy is not another human being. People may become instruments of Satan, false teachers may spread error, governments may enact oppressive laws, and religious organizations may become corrupted; but behind the visible conflict stands an invisible adversary. Paul identifies that enemy as: principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in high places. This is why human strength alone is insufficient. We need divine armor. Paul therefore immediately continues:

“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13

The objective is not merely to understand the battle. We must stand.

CHRIST HAS NOT LEFT HIS PEOPLE WITHOUT A BATTLE PLAN

The good news is that God has not concealed the nature of this conflict from His people. Christ is not sending His soldiers into battle without instruction, preparation, or assistance.

We are told:
“Christ presents before his soldiers the plan of the battle. He points out the imminent peril of the conflict, and enjoins every one to count the cost. As he shows us the preparation that we must make for the battle, he assures us that we shall have divine assistance. In our human weakness, we shall be enabled to do the deeds of omnipotence.” Review and Herald, April 12, 1906, par. 13

This is a beautiful balance. First, Christ shows us the battle. Then He shows us the danger. Then He shows us the preparation. And finally He assures us of divine assistance. We are weak-but God is strong. We are surrounded by an organized confederacy of evil-but heaven is not inactive.

“The Lord has not concealed from His followers the plan of the battle. He has presented before His people the great conflict, and He has given them words of encouragement. He charges them not to enter into the battle without counting the cost, while He assures them that they do not fight alone, but that supernatural agencies will enable the weak, if they trust in Him, to become strong against the vast confederacy of evil arrayed against them. He points them to the universe of heaven, and assures them that holy beings are wrestling against principalities and powers and the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Letter 102a, March 9, 1896 (UL 82)

The invisible battle is therefore not merely earth against earth. There is a conflict involving the entire universe. And the Christian has been invited to stand on the winning side.

WHY STUDY SPIRITUALISM?

This brings us to the particular burden of this study. If Satan is an invisible adversary, how does he work? How does he gain access to the human mind? How does he deceive? How does he disguise error? How does he make darkness appear to be light? And, especially: How does spiritualism become one of Satan's instruments in the final conflict? These questions go beyond history. These are questions concerning our salvation.

1 Timothy 4:1 warns, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”

Notice the words: “Seducing spirits” and “doctrines of devils.” The devil does not always attack openly. Sometimes he seduces. Sometimes he counterfeits. Sometimes he disguises. Sometimes he takes something false and makes it appear spiritual, beneficial, religious, or even Christian. That is precisely why spiritualism deserves careful examination.

THE INROADS OF SPIRITUALISM

The Spirit of Prophecy identifies spiritualism as one of the great deceptions that would be exposed in the final proclamation of the third angel's message.

“Thus will the message of the third angel be proclaimed. As the time comes for the loud cry to be given, the Lord will work through humble instruments, leading the minds of those who consecrate themselves to his service. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of his Spirit than by the training of literary institutions. Men of faith and prayer will be constrained to go forth with holy zeal, declaring the words which God gives them. The sins of Babylon will be laid open. The fearful results of a union of Church and State, the inroads of Spiritualism, the stealthy but rapid progress of the papal power,—all will be unmasked.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 424

Notice the phrase: “The inroads of Spiritualism.” An inroad is an advance into territory. Spiritualism therefore should not be understood merely as an isolated collection of occult practices. It represents an advancing influence. It seeks entrance, acceptance, and influence. And ultimately it seeks to become so widespread and so deceptively integrated with religion that its true origin and purpose are no longer recognized. This is why the subject deserves more than a superficial treatment.

THE TWO GREAT ERRORS

The Spirit of Prophecy also identifies two great errors through which Satan would especially work.

“Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of Spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome.” “Protestantism will yet stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of Spiritualism; she will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, our country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 405

This statement establishes an important prophetic connection. The issue is not merely spiritualism by itself. There is a larger network of deception. The immortality-of-the-soul doctrine provides a foundation upon which spiritualism can operate. Sunday sacredness creates a connection with Rome. And Protestantism, spiritualism, and Roman power ultimately converge in a conflict involving conscience and religious liberty. That is why the study of spiritualism cannot be separated from the final conflict.

SPIRITUALISM CHANGES ITS APPEARANCE

One of Satan's most dangerous methods is not simply to introduce error, but to change the appearance of error.

“Spiritualism is now changing its form, veiling some of its more objectionable and immoral features, and assuming a Christian guise. Formerly it denounced Christ and the Bible; now it professes to accept both.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 405

This statement gives us the key to the title of this study: INROADS AND TRANSMUTATION. Spiritualism changes. Its outward appearance may change. Its terminology may change. Its methods may change. Its presentation may change. But its underlying source and objective do not change. It may once have openly rejected Christianity. Then it begins to speak Christian language. It may once have openly attacked the Bible. Then it begins to quote the Bible. It may once have rejected Christ. Then it begins to speak about Christ. Therefore the question cannot simply be: “Does this mention Christ?” The question must be: “Is this according to the Word of God?” The standard is Scripture.

Isaiah 8:20 declares, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

This principle will become increasingly important as we proceed.

THE GREAT DANGER

The greatest danger of spiritualism is therefore not merely that it exists. The greatest danger is that it can become difficult to recognize. Satan is a deceiver.

2 Corinthians 11:14 warns, “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

If Satan openly presented himself as the enemy, deception would be much easier to detect. But he does not always come as an enemy. He can come as an apparent friend. He can come through religious language. He can come through supernatural manifestations. He can come through experiences. He can come through false teachers. He can come through apparently miraculous signs. And he can come through teachings that sound spiritual while contradicting the Word of God. Therefore this study is not designed merely to expose obvious occultism. It is designed to examine the inroads and transmutation of spiritualism-how it enters, how it changes its appearance, how it gains acceptance, and how it ultimately becomes part of Satan's larger deception.

THE BATTLE BEFORE US

We have now established the foundation. There is an invisible battle. Satan is the adversary. Human beings are not the ultimate enemy. The conflict involves spiritual powers. Christ has revealed the battle plan. He has provided divine assistance. And spiritualism is identified as one of the advancing forces of deception. Therefore we must ask the next question: How does Satan gain access to the human mind? Before we can understand the spells of Satan, we must understand Satan's work with the human mind. Before we can identify spiritualism in its many disguises, we must understand how deception operates. And before we can learn how to break free from Satan's influence, we must understand how that influence begins.

SATAN’S WORK WITH THE HUMAN MIND

HOW DOES SATAN WORK WITH THE HUMAN MIND?

The invisible battle becomes much clearer when we understand where Satan seeks to gain his greatest advantage. Satan does not merely seek to control outward circumstances. He seeks to influence the mind. The mind is the battlefield upon which truth and error contend. The thoughts we entertain, the voices we listen to, the theories we accept, the doubts we cherish, and the choices we make all have a bearing upon our spiritual condition.

We have a solemn warning:
“For thousands of years Satan has been experimenting upon the properties of the human mind, and he has learned to know it well. By his subtle workings in these last days he is linking the human mind with his own, imbuing it with his thoughts; and he is doing this work in so deceptive a manner that those who accept his guidance know not that they are being led by him at his will. The great deceiver hopes so to confuse the minds of men and women that none but his voice will be heard.” Letter 244, 1907 (2SM 352)

This is a startling statement. Satan's objective is not merely to tempt a person into committing an obvious sin. His deeper objective is to influence the mind until his suggestions are accepted as one's own thoughts. The deception becomes especially dangerous when the person being deceived does not recognize the source of the influence. That is why the Christian must learn to distinguish between: God's voice and Satan's voice. Truth and error. The Word of God and human speculation. The leading of the Holy Spirit and counterfeit spiritual influence.

TAKE HEED WHAT YE HEAR

Christ gave His followers a very simple but profound warning:

“If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear...” Mark 4:23-24

Notice Christ's words: “Take heed what ye hear.” Why would Christ warn us about what we hear? Because what enters the mind through the ear can influence the thoughts, and what influences the thoughts can influence the character and ultimately the actions. Not every voice deserves our attention. Not every teaching deserves our consideration. Not every spiritual experience comes from God. Not every supernatural manifestation is divine. Not every religious teacher speaks truth. Therefore Christ says: “Take heed what ye hear.”

The book of Proverbs gives the same principle:
“Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.” Proverbs 19:27

There are voices that lead toward truth. There are also voices that lead away from truth. The question is therefore not simply: “What am I hearing?” The deeper question is: “Where is what I am hearing leading me?” Does it lead me toward the Word of God? Toward obedience? Toward Christ? Toward holiness? Or does it gradually lead me away from God's revealed truth?

EVE: THE FIRST HUMAN VICTIM OF SATAN’S DECEPTION

The Bible's first recorded example of Satan deceiving a human being gives us a pattern that remains relevant today. Before sin entered the world, Adam and Eve were warned about their enemy.

“The angels warned them [Adam & Eve] of Satan and cautioned them not to separate from each other in their employment, for they might be brought in contact with this fallen foe. The angels also enjoined upon them to follow closely the directions God had given them, for in perfect obedience only were they safe. Then this fallen foe could have no power over them.” Early Writings, p. 147

Notice the principle: “In perfect obedience only were they safe.” Their safety was not found in their own wisdom. It was found in obedience to God's revealed instruction. God had already told them what they were to do. Therefore they did not need to debate with Satan, to investigate his claims, or to experiment with his suggestions. They simply needed to believe and obey God's Word. But Satan approached Eve.

Then the following describes the sequence:

“Satan commenced his work with Eve, to cause her to disobey. She first erred in wandering from her husband, next in lingering around the forbidden tree, and next in listening to the voice of the tempter, and even daring to doubt what God had said, "In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Early Writings, p. 147

Look carefully at the sequence of events: She wandered. She lingered. She listened. She doubted. She disobeyed. The temptation did not begin with the eating of the fruit. The battle began before the fruit was touched. The battle began in the mind.

THE DANGER OF PARLEYING WITH TEMPTATION

The serpent did not immediately command Eve to reject God. He began with a question: “Yea, hath God said?” Genesis 3:1

That question opened the door to doubt. Eve knew what God had said. But instead of immediately rejecting the serpent's contradiction, she entered into conversation with him.

The Spirit of Prophecy explains:
“Had Eve refrained from entering into argument with the tempter, she would have been safe; but she ventured to parley with him and fell a victim to his wiles. It is thus that many are still overcome. They doubt and argue concerning the requirements of God; and instead of obeying the divine commands, they accept human theories, which but disguise the devices of Satan.” Spirit of Prophecy, Vol 4, p. 351

This is one of the most important principles in this entire study. Eve's first failure was not eating. Her first failure was engaging the tempter on his terms. God had spoken. The serpent contradicted God's Word. At that point, there should have been no debate.

The same danger exists today.

When God has clearly spoken, Satan seeks to move the discussion away from: “What hath God said?” and toward: “What do you think?” “What does human reasoning say?” “What does experience say?” “What does popular opinion say?” “What do the scholars say?” “What does tradition say?” “What does this supernatural manifestation appear to prove?” But the Christian's foundation must remain: “It is written.”

SATAN DOES NOT USE ONLY ONE METHOD

Satan understands that human beings are different. A temptation that works upon one person may not work upon another. Therefore he varies his approach.

We are told:
“Satan varies his enticements to suit different minds; and he takes advantage of every circumstance to make his plans for a soul’s destruction successful.” RH November 9, 1886, par. 14

This explains why we must not expect Satan's deceptions to appear in only one form. One person may be attracted by intellectual theories. Another may be attracted by emotional experiences. Another may be attracted by supernatural manifestations. Another may be drawn through worldly pleasure. Another may be deceived through false religion. Another may be led through pride, self-exaltation, or desire for spiritual power. The method may differ. The objective remains the same: separation from God and His truth.

SATAN CAN ASSUME A RELIGIOUS CHARACTER

One of Satan's most dangerous strategies is to make deception appear religious.

“Satan, pleased with the deception, assumes a religious character, and leads the minds of these professed Christians to himself, working with his power, his signs and lying wonders, to fasten them in his snare.”
“Some he deceives in one way, and some in another. He has different delusions prepared to affect different minds. Some look with horror upon one deception, while they readily receive another. Satan deceives some with Spiritualism. He also comes as an angel of light and spreads his influence over the land by means of false reformations.” Early Writings, p. 261

This is precisely why spiritual deception is so dangerous. Satan does not have to persuade everyone in the same way. He has “different delusions prepared to affect different minds.” Some people would reject an obvious occult practice. But they may readily accept a religious counterfeit. Some would reject an open denial of Christianity. But they may accept a teaching that uses Christian terminology while undermining the authority of Scripture. Some would reject an obvious miracle performed by an occultist. But they may accept a supernatural manifestation because it appears to confirm a religious teaching they already desire to believe. The danger is not simply falsehood. The danger is falsehood disguised as truth.

THE GREAT DECEIVER HIDES HIS DECEPTIONS

This is why Satan seeks to obscure the very things that would expose him.

“It is the result of a studied effort of the prince of darkness to conceal from men that which reveals his deceptions. For this reason, Christ the Revelator, foreseeing the warfare that would be waged against the study of the Revelation, pronounced a blessing upon all who should read, hear, and observe the words of the prophecy.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 212

This is significant. Satan does not merely introduce deception. He also attempts to hide the evidence that would expose the deception. Therefore God's people must study the very portions of Scripture that Satan would prefer them to neglect. The book of Revelation is not given merely to satisfy curiosity about future events. It is given so that God's people can recognize the movements of the enemy and remain faithful to Christ.

The blessing is pronounced upon those who: “readeth” “hear” and “keep those things which are written therein.”

Revelation 1:3 says, “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”

Notice the threefold sequence: Read. Hear. Keep. Biblical knowledge must become biblical obedience.

WHEN ONE DISGUISE FAILS, ANOTHER APPEARS

Because Satan adapts his methods, discovering one deception does not mean that every other deception will automatically be recognized.

“We are surrounded with temptations so disguised that they allure while they taint and corrupt the soul. Satan varies his enticements to suit different minds; and he takes advantage of every circumstance to make his plans for a soul’s destruction successful.” RH November 9, 1886, par. 14

This gives us an important warning. Satan's deception is not static. It is adaptable. If one form of error is exposed, another may appear in a different form. If an obvious deception is rejected, a subtler one may be presented. If a false teaching becomes unpopular, it may be repackaged. If a religious error is exposed in secular clothing, it may later return in religious clothing. If people learn to recognize one manifestation of spiritualism, another manifestation may be presented that they do not immediately associate with spiritualism. Therefore we must not merely learn to recognize one particular deception. We must learn to recognize the principles of deception. And the only reliable standard is the Word of God.

THE QUESTION IS NOT: “DOES IT APPEAR SPIRITUAL?”

The final deception will require something more than mere knowledge of occult terminology. It will require spiritual discernment.

1 John 4:1 commands: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”

Notice: “Believe not every spirit.” Not every spiritual manifestation is from God. Not every spiritual teacher speaks for God. Not every supernatural experience is evidence of God's approval. Not every miracle proves that a message is true. The command is: “Try the spirits.” And the test must always be the Word of God. Isaiah gives the divine standard: Isaiah 8:20 “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” This principle will become increasingly important as we examine spiritualism in its many forms and disguises.

THE LESSON FROM EVE

The experience of Eve gives us a warning that reaches directly into the subject of this study. She did not fall because she lacked intelligence. She fell because she listened to a voice that contradicted God's Word. She did not fall because Satan appeared openly as Satan. He approached her through deception. He questioned God's Word. He introduced doubt. He offered an alternative interpretation. He promised something that God had not promised. And he presented disobedience as an opportunity for advancement.

The same basic strategy continues.

Satan seeks to make error appear desirable. He seeks to make disobedience appear harmless. He seeks to make God's restrictions appear unnecessary. And he seeks to make his own suggestions appear more attractive than God's revealed Word. Therefore the safeguard remains the same: Hear God's Word. Believe God's Word. Obey God's Word.

THE MIND MUST HAVE A MASTER

There is no neutral ground in the great controversy. Every person is being influenced by something. The question is: Who is influencing the mind?

Christ desires to bring the mind into harmony with truth. Satan desires to bring the mind under his influence. Christ leads through truth. Satan leads through deception. Christ calls us to liberty. Satan seeks bondage. Christ says: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32 Satan seeks to make the false appear true. Therefore the battle for the mind is inseparably connected with the battle over what we hear, what we believe, and whom we obey. And this brings us to the next major question: If Satan seeks to influence the human mind through deception, how does he make his deceptions appear spiritual, religious, and even Christian?

That question leads us directly into the next section: THE SPELL OF GOD.

THE SPELL OF GOD

Romans 1:16 declares: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.”

Notice the phrase: “The power of God.” The gospel is not merely information, a philosophy, and a collection of religious ideas. The gospel is “the power of God unto salvation.” God's truth has power to transform the life. It reaches the mind and heart. It changes the character and produces obedience. And it brings the sinner into harmony with God.

The English word “gospel” historically developed through terms associated with the idea of “good news” or “good telling.” The important point for this study, however, is not the English word itself, but what the gospel actually does. The gospel is God's good news of salvation through Jesus Christ-and that good news comes with divine power.

THE POWER OF THE HOLY GHOST

Before Christ ascended to heaven, He gave His disciples a promise:

Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

The disciples were not sent into the world in their own strength. They were to receive power. The source of that power was the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit would enable them to: proclaim the truth, bear witness for Christ, confront error, endure opposition, overcome fear, and live according to the truth they preached. The same principle applies to God's people today. The work of God cannot be accomplished merely through human ability. We need the power of the Holy Spirit.

“UNDER THE SPELL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”

This brings us to an unusual but very important expression used by Sister White about an occasion when she presented God's truth, she said:

“I had words to speak given me of God, and I knew the people present were under the spell of the Holy SpiritIt was the last time I was to address them. I felt the sustaining grace and power of God comforting and blessing me that I might present the truth as it is in Jesus. When I had finished speaking, I was greeted by quite a number, who thanked me for the light given them in the discourse that afternoon. “But my heart said, ‘Will they obey? Will they walk in the way of the commandments of God?’” Letter 82, 1895, par. 23

This quotation is extremely important for understanding what we mean by “The Spell of God.” The people were not under some occult enchantment. They were not being manipulated against their will. The Holy Spirit was bringing the truth before their minds with such power that they were deeply impressed by the message. And notice Sister White's concern. She did not merely ask: “Were they impressed?” She asked: “Will they obey?” That is the distinction we must keep before us throughout this study. A person may be emotionally moved. A person may be fascinated. A person may experience something extraordinary. A person may even witness what appears to be supernatural. But none of these things, by themselves, establish that the experience is from God. The true work of the Holy Spirit leads the individual to truth and obedience.

THE TRUE POWER OF GOD LEADS TO OBEDIENCE

This is one of the central principles of the entire study. God's power does not lead people away from His revealed law. It leads them into harmony with it. The Holy Spirit does not make God's commandments unnecessary. The Holy Spirit writes God's principles upon the heart.

The psalmist understood this relationship:

“Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.” Psalm 119:27

“Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.” Psalm 119:34

The sequence is significant: Understanding leads to keeping, observing, and ultimately obedience.
This is why Sister White's question after her preaching is so revealing: “Will they obey?”
The purpose of divine influence is not merely to produce an emotional response. It is to produce a transformed life.

CHRIST PREACHED WITH POWER

Jesus Himself demonstrated this divine power.

Luke 4:32 says, “And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.”

Christ's words carried divine authority.

Sister White describes the effect of His teaching:

“As something strange and new, these words fall upon the ears of the wondering multitude. Such teaching is contrary to all they have ever heard from priest or rabbi. They see in it nothing to flatter their pride or to feed their ambitious hopes. But there is about this new Teacher a power that holds them spellbound.” Mount of Blessing, p. 6

Here we encounter the word “spellbound.” The expression describes the profound effect Christ's words had upon His hearers. They were astonished and captivated by the authority and truth of His teaching. But we must understand the distinction. Christ did not use occult power. He did not manipulate minds. He did not cast a supernatural spell upon His hearers. He spoke truth with divine authority. The power was in the truth and in the Spirit through whom it was presented.

Christ Himself declared:
“The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63

Christ's influence therefore did not bypass the mind. It enlightened the mind. It appealed to the conscience. It revealed truth. It called for a decision.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIVINE INFLUENCE AND SATANIC CONTROL

This distinction is absolutely essential. The word spell can have different meanings. In ordinary English it can refer to being deeply fascinated or captivated by something. Historically, it has also carried meanings associated with telling, teaching, or enchanting.

But we must not confuse these meanings.

God's influence is not occult enchantment. The Holy Spirit does not operate through witchcraft, sorcery, or magical manipulation. God appeals to the conscience. God reveals truth. God convicts of sin. God invites repentance. God calls for obedience.

Christ said: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock.” Revelation 3:20

He does not force His way into the heart. He knocks. The individual must open the door. This is fundamentally different from Satan's counterfeit methods.

WHEN THE “SPELL” WAS BROKEN

There is another passage in the Spirit of Prophecy that helps us understand this terminology when Christ encounters the temple authorities.

“This Man, who came teaching humility and love, aroused their hatred and scorn. When he arose in the majesty of his sacred mission, they were stricken with sudden fear and condemnation. But, after the spell was broken, in the hardness of their hearts, they wondered why they had been so terror-stricken and fled so precipitately from the presence of a single man.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 2, p. 121

Again, the word spell is being used descriptively. Christ's presence and divine authority produced a powerful conviction upon these men. They were confronted by something they could not easily dismiss. But notice what happened afterward. When that powerful impression passed, “the hardness of their hearts” returned.

This gives us another important lesson:
A powerful impression is not the same thing as conversion. A person can be deeply moved and still resist God. He can tremble under conviction and later reject the truth. He can hear a powerful sermon and afterward return to the old life. Therefore, God's objective is not merely to produce an impressive moment. He desires a surrendered heart and an obedient life.

THE POWER IN PAUL'S PREACHING

The apostle Paul understood this principle. He did not depend upon human eloquence to accomplish God's work. He said,
“And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” 1 Corinthians 2:4

Paul's preaching was accompanied by: “the Spirit and of power.” But notice what Paul was preaching. He was preaching Christ crucified.
“For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:2

The Holy Spirit's power therefore does not draw attention away from Christ and toward the messenger. It magnifies Christ. It does not exalt human wisdom. It reveals divine truth. It does not produce spiritual confusion. It produces conviction and understanding.

THE PURPOSE OF DIVINE POWER

Why does God give His Spirit? Why does He give power? Why does He impress the mind? Why does He send His Word? The answer is ultimately salvation and transformation.

Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation.”

And salvation does not mean merely being emotionally comforted. Christ saves us from sin.

The angel declared:
“Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

The power of God therefore works in us to bring us out of sin and into harmony with God's will.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 says, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification.”

1 John 2:3 declares, “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”

Thus we see the connection: The gospel brings power. The Holy Spirit brings power. The power brings conviction. Conviction leads to repentance. Repentance leads to obedience. Obedience demonstrates that the truth has taken hold of the life.

GOD DOES NOT BYPASS THE WILL

There is another distinction that must be established before we examine Satan's counterfeit. God never needs to destroy the human will in order to save the sinner. He seeks the cooperation of the will.

Philippians 2:13 says: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

God works in us. He gives the desire. He gives the power. But He does not turn human beings into helpless machines. The believer must respond to divine grace. Joshua therefore declared: “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” Joshua 24:15

The call to choose demonstrates that God deals with human beings as moral agents. This is why the biblical experience of the Holy Spirit should never be confused with occult control. The Holy Spirit enlightens, convicts, teaches, transforms, and empowers. But the Holy Spirit leads us into truth and willing obedience.

THE TRUE “SPELL” OF GOD

We can therefore summarize the biblical principle: The “spell of God” is NOT an occult spell, magic, hypnosis, mind control, a mystical power that removes freedom. It is the powerful influence of divine truth through the Holy Spirit, captivating the heart with the beauty of Christ, awakening the conscience, revealing sin, producing faith, and leading the believer into willing obedience to God. That is why Sister White's statement is so significant: “I knew the people present were under the spell of the Holy Spirit.” And immediately her concern was: “Will they obey?” That question should remain before us. For the test of divine influence is not merely: Did I feel something?, Was I fascinated?, Was there a supernatural manifestation? The question is: Did this lead me into the truth of God's Word? Did it lead me to Christ, to repentance, and to obedience?

The two powers should never be confused. John therefore gives us the essential command:
1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” There must be a test and a standard. There must be discernment. And that standard is the Word of God.

PREPARING TO STUDY THE COUNTERFEIT

We have now established why the study of Satan's deceptions must begin with an understanding of God's true work. God has power. The Holy Spirit has power. The gospel has power. Christ's Word has power. But God's power does not contradict God's Word. It does not abolish God's law. It does not lead into sin. It does not exalt Satan. It does not make the human being independent of Scripture. Instead, divine power brings the believer into harmony with God's revealed will. Therefore, when we next examine the spells of Satan, we will have a standard by which to test them. We will not ask merely: “Is there power?” We will ask: “What kind of power is this?” We will not ask merely: “Was there a supernatural manifestation?” We will ask: “Does it agree with the Word of God?” We will not ask merely: “Did it produce an emotional experience?” We will ask: “What fruit did it produce?” And above all: Does it lead to Christ, truth, and obedience-or does it lead away from them?

For Satan's greatest danger is not that he will appear openly as Satan. His greatest danger is that he will counterfeit the work of God. That brings us to the next section: THE SPELLS OF SATAN

THE UNHOLY SPELL OF SATAN

THE POWER OF SATAN

We have seen that the power of God works through truth, conviction, transformation, and willing obedience. But there is another power at work in the world. It is the power of Satan. The Bible describes Satan as an adversary who seeks to deceive, enslave, and destroy.

Paul warns of those who possess:
“A form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” 2 Timothy 3:5

Notice the contrast. There can be a form of religion without the power of true godliness. There can be religious appearance without spiritual transformation. There can be profession without obedience. There can be supernatural claims without divine authority. And there can be an apparent spirituality that actually leads the soul away from God. That is one of Satan's greatest methods. He does not always seek to destroy religion. Sometimes he seeks to counterfeit it.

FROM THE POWER OF SATAN TO THE POWER OF GOD

When Christ sent Paul to preach the gospel, He described the work of conversion as a transfer from one kingdom to another:

“To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” Acts 26:18

Notice the contrast: Darkness to light, Satan's power to God's power, Sin to forgiveness, Unholiness to sanctification. The gospel therefore does not merely give information. It delivers people from a power. Paul gives the same thought in Colossians:
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” Colossians 1:13

There are therefore two opposing powers. The Christian must understand the difference.

SATAN'S UNHOLY SPELL

How does Satan gain influence over the mind? One way is through deception that gradually becomes captivating.

Sister White gives a remarkable warning:

“Satan is seeking by every means he can devise, to suggest doubts concerning the truth of God's word. Those who are naturally inclined to skepticism should, above all others, avoid everything that would strengthen this dangerous tendency. On the contrary, many read with avidity skeptical writings which exert such a deceptive, bewitching power that the reader seeks in vain to free the mind or purify the heart from the unholy spell. Evil angels, having once gained access, suggest doubts that human reasoning is powerless to remove. When God speaks to the soul, those who would be free will cut every tie that holds them under Satan's power. They will destroy that which so nearly proved their ruin, lest it prove the ruin of others.” Signs of the Times, May 18, 1882, par. 26

Here we have the expression: “The unholy spell.” What is it? It is not necessarily an occult ceremony. It can begin with something as apparently simple as doubt. A person reads, listens, or entertains skepticism. The doubt is repeated. The mind becomes fascinated by the question. The confidence in God's Word weakens. The heart becomes increasingly resistant to truth. Eventually the person finds it difficult to escape the influence. That is why Satan's spell is so dangerous. It may begin with something that does not appear dangerous at all.

SATAN'S SPELLS ARE NOT ALL THE SAME

The Bible gives us explicit warnings about occult practices.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says, “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD."

The list is extensive. God forbids all these abominable practices for these are not harmless forms of entertainment. They are forbidden because they open the door to a power that is opposed to God.

THE BIBLICAL IDEA OF ENCHANTMENT

The Hebrew terminology behind some of these words helps us understand why the Bible uses such strong language. The Hebrew word translated “enchanter” in Deuteronomy 18:10 is nachash, which can carry the idea of practicing enchantment or divination. The word translated “charmer” in verse 11 comes from chabar, involving the idea of joining or binding, and in its particular usage can refer to enchantment or fascination. The important point, however, is not merely the dictionary definition. The Bible's command is unmistakable: “For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD.” Therefore God's people are not to experiment with forbidden supernatural practices.

BUT WHAT ARE SATAN'S “SPELLS”?

This is where the subject becomes broader. The Spirit of Prophecy uses the word “spell” in a number of contexts that do not necessarily involve formal occult practices. That is important. Satan's spells can include anything through which he captivates, deceives, weakens, or holds the mind away from God and truth.

THE SPELL OF INDIFFERENCE, CARELESSNESS, AND INDOLENCE

“Again, Satan sees the Lord's servants burdened because of the spiritual darkness that enshrouds the people. He hears their earnest prayers for divine grace and power to break the spell of indifference, carelessness, and indolence. Then with renewed zeal he plies his arts.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 341

Notice something very important. Satan does not always need to make a person violently oppose truth. Sometimes he simply makes the person indifferent to it. That can be just as dangerous. A person may know the truth but become careless. A person may hear the warning but postpone obedience. A person may recognize the danger but become spiritually lazy. The enemy is satisfied when the Christian becomes indifferent.

THE SPELL OF FANATICISM

“The apostasy will exist in this night of spiritual darkness. It will be destroyed by the brightness and exceeding glory of Christ’s coming. O, what a day of gladness for the righteous that will be! What a breaking up of the spell of fanaticism and delusive sentiments when Christ shall shine forth before His ancients gloriously! Then the system of satanic delusion, which souls have preferred to the truth that involves a cross, will be broken up.” Letter 31, 1897

Notice the expression: “satanic delusion.” Fanaticism can therefore become another kind of satanic spell. A person may become so absorbed in an idea, movement, experience, or religious excitement that truth itself is displaced. This gives us another important principle:
Not everything that appears intensely religious is necessarily the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God leads into truth. Satan can produce religious excitement that is disconnected from truth.

THE SPELL OF COLDNESS AND WORLDLINESS

“This meeting was timely; it seemed to break the spell of coldness and worldliness, and, from this point, there was steady advancement.” Signs of the Times, May 25, 1882

Think about this. A person can be under Satan's influence without practicing witchcraft. He can be under Satan's influence while sitting in church. He can sing hymns and still be spiritually cold. He can profess Christianity and yet be absorbed in the world. Therefore we must broaden our understanding. Satan's spell is not limited to occultism. Anything that captivates the mind and draws it away from God can become an avenue through which the enemy works.

THE SPELL OF SKEPTICISM

“Many consider it a virtue to doubt; and they delight in finding something in the Scriptures to puzzle the minds of others. They do not realize that they are thus entangling themselves in the snare of the fowler. There is a bewitching power in skepticism. Unbelief and stubbornness usually go hand in hand. When a man has once yielded to this deception of Satan, it will be found well-nigh impossible to break the spell.” Signs of the Times, June 8, 1882

This is a serious warning. Skepticism can become bewitching. Doubt can become addictive. The person begins by questioning one thing. Then another. Then another. Eventually doubt itself becomes the lens through which everything is examined. Faith in God's Word disappears. And what once seemed like intellectual freedom becomes spiritual bondage. The person who thinks he has escaped deception may actually have become captive to another deception.

THE SPELL OF DELAY

“God’s call of mercy sounded in his ears, but he did not make decided efforts to obey. Every additional ray of light hardened his heart against increased light. The spell of delay was upon him, and he said to the Spirit, ‘Go thy way, for this time, and when I have a more convenient season, I will call for thee.’” Manuscript 13, 1898

This is another subtle spell that can be even more difficult to recognize: delay. This is a reference to Acts 24:25. Felix trembled. He was convicted. But he postponed the decision. “Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.” The convenient season never came. How many souls have been lost through the same deception? Not because they openly rejected truth. Not because they openly hated Christ. But because they said: “Later.” Later I will repent. Later I will obey. Later I will study. Later I will surrender. Later I will change. Later I will separate from the influence. Satan does not always have to convince a person to say “No.” Sometimes he only has to persuade the person to say: “Not yet.”

THE SPELL OF INFATUATION

“The Spirit of God is ever seeking to break the spell of infatuation that holds men absorbed in worldly things, and to awaken a desire for the imperishable treasure. It is by resisting the Spirit that men become inattentive to or neglectful of God's word.” Christ's Object Lessons, p. 56

Here the conflict is between: the imperishable treasure and the attractions of this world. The person becomes so fascinated with earthly things that eternal realities lose their importance. This is another form of captivity. Jesus warned: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:21. The heart follows the treasure. If the world becomes the treasure, the world eventually becomes the master.

THE SPELL OF LICENTIOUSNESS

“We are living in an atmosphere of satanic witchery. The enemy will weave a spell of licentiousness around every soul that is not barricaded by the grace of Christ. Temptations will come; but if we watch against the enemy and maintain the balance of self-control and purity, the seducing spirits will have no influence over us.” Counsels to Teachers, p. 257

The expression is powerful: “a spell of licentiousness.” Satan can use sensuality to captivate the mind. He can use lust to weaken reason. He can use immoral entertainment to corrupt the imagination. He can use repeated exposure to sin until what once shocked the conscience becomes normal. And again, the principle is the same: Captivation leads to weakening of discernment, to acceptance, to bondage.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE YIELD?

We now come to the central question: What happens when a person yields to Satan's spell? The answer is serious: Sin gains control. The conscience becomes weakened. The mind becomes confused. The heart becomes hardened. Truth becomes distasteful. Error becomes attractive. And eventually the person may find himself defending the very thing that is destroying him. This is why Satan's objective is ultimately connected with transgression of God's law. John gives us the biblical definition:

• “Sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4

Satan therefore seeks to separate humanity from God's law. And one of his methods is to make disobedience appear attractive.

BALAAM AND THE ENCHANTMENT OF ISRAEL

The account of Balaam gives us an important example. Balaam had been called upon to curse Israel. But God would not permit him to curse those whom God had blessed. Yet Balaam yielded to temptation and became an instrument of Satan.

“Balaam, who had already yielded to temptation, now became fully the agent of Satan; and he determined to accomplish indirectly what God had not permitted him to do directly. He at once laid a snare whereby Israel should be enchanted with the beautiful Moabitish women, who would lead them to transgress God's law. This is intended as a warning to the people of God living in the last days.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, pp. 598-599

This is one of the most instructive examples in the entire study. Satan could not get Balaam to curse Israel directly. So another method was employed. If Israel could not be cursed from the outside, they could be led into sin from within. The result would be separation from God. The women of Moab became an avenue through which Israel was enticed into idolatry and immorality. And this is explicit warning to us. The principle is profound. Satan does not always attack God's people by openly declaring war. Sometimes he seeks to entice them into compromise. He seeks to make sin attractive. He seeks to make forbidden things appear desirable. He seeks to weaken the distinction between God's people and the world. And once obedience is compromised, spiritual power is lost.

HEROD AND THE FALSE ENCHANTMENT

Another striking illustration is found in the experience of Herod.

"Salome was decorated with costly garlands and flowers. She was adorned with sparkling jewels and flashing bracelets. With little covering and less modesty she danced for the amusement of the royal guests.To their perverted senses, the enchanting appearance of this, to them, vision of beauty and loveliness charmed them. Instead of being governed by enlightened reason, refined taste, or sensitive consciences, the lower qualities of the mind held the guiding reins. Virtue and principle had no controlling power.
“The false enchantment of the dizzy scene seemed to take away reason and dignity from Herod and his guests, who were flushed with wine. The music and wine and dancing had removed the fear and reverence of God from them.” Review and Herald, March 11, 1873, par. 7,8 (also see 2SP 77)

Notice what happened. The atmosphere was deliberately constructed. Music. Wine. Dancing. Sensual display. Excitement. And the result? “The fear and reverence of God” were removed. Herod's judgment became corrupted. His passions took control. His conscience was overridden. And ultimately he made a rash oath that resulted in the death of John the Baptist. This is another form of Satan's spell. It does not have to involve a crystal ball. It does not have to involve a séance or a medium. It can involve the deliberate stimulation of the senses until reason, conscience, and reverence for God are weakened.

THE PATTERN OF THE UNHOLY SPELL

We can now see a pattern developing throughout Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy. Satan seeks to:

1. Gain access to the mind.
2. Introduce doubt or temptation.
3. Appeal to the senses or desires.
4. Make error attractive.
5. Weaken discernment.
6. Separate the person from God's Word.
7. Lead the person into disobedience.
8. Harden the heart through repeated resistance to truth.
9. Bring the person into bondage.

The form may differ. The underlying strategy remains. That is why Satan's “spells” can include:

• skepticism,
• unbelief,
• indifference,
• carelessness,
• worldliness,
• delay,
• fanaticism,
• sensuality,
• false religion,
• spiritualistic manifestations,
• and other forms of deception.

The common denominator is this: The mind becomes captivated and the will is drawn away from the revealed will of God.

THE GREAT CONTRAST

We can now see the difference between the true work of God and the counterfeit work of Satan.

The Holy Spirit seeks to break the spell of sin. Satan seeks to strengthen it. The Holy Spirit awakens the conscience. Satan seeks to deaden it. The Holy Spirit leads to God's Word. Satan seeks to make God's Word appear doubtful or unnecessary. The Holy Spirit leads to obedience. Satan seeks to lead into transgression. Therefore the question is not simply: “Is there a spiritual power involved?” The more important question is: “Where does this power lead?” Does it lead to Christ? Does it lead to truth? Does it lead to obedience? Does it lead to holiness? Or does it lead away from God's Word?

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR SPIRITUALISM

This brings us to the central subject of the study. If we define spiritualism merely as: “people communicating with the dead,” we will miss much of Satan's strategy. Spiritualism is far broader in its ultimate objective. It is part of a system of satanic deception that seeks to: captivate the mind, counterfeit the work of God, remove confidence in Scripture, introduce false spiritual authority, and ultimately lead people away from obedience to God. This is why spiritualism can change its appearance. It can wear different clothing. It can use different vocabulary. It can enter through different doors. It can appeal to different personalities. Yes, “Satan varies his enticements to suit different minds.” Therefore, we must learn to recognize not merely one manifestation, but the principles underlying the deception. And this prepares us for the next major section.

SPIRITUALISM IN VARIED FORMS AND DISGUISE

Before we examine modern spiritualism specifically, we must understand that Satan's methods have never been confined to one form. The Bible reveals many forms of forbidden spiritual influence. The Spirit of Prophecy shows how those forms can be adapted to different minds and different generations. And in the last days, the enemy will increasingly change the outward appearance of his deception while preserving its underlying purpose. The next question therefore becomes: What forms can spiritualism take-and how can we recognize it when it no longer looks like the spiritualism of the past?

SPIRITUALISM IN VARIED FORMS AND DISGUISE

Satan's methods are not always obvious. If the enemy always appeared openly as Satan, very few would willingly follow him. His greatest success comes when error is disguised as truth, deception appears as enlightenment, and falsehood is presented in an attractive form. This is why the Bible repeatedly warns God's people to exercise discernment.

2 Corinthians 11:14 says, “For Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

Satan does not need to destroy the appearance of religion in order to deceive. He can use religion. He can use philosophy. He can use education. He can use science falsely so called. He can use human reasoning. He can use emotional experiences. He can use supernatural manifestations. And he can even use professed Christianity as a disguise. This is why the final deception will be so dangerous.

SATAN'S ERRORS WILL APPEAR IN NEW FORMS

We have an extensive warning concerning the last days:
“The experience of the past will be repeated. In the future, Satan's superstitions will assume new forms. Errors will be presented in a pleasing and flattering manner. False theories, clothed with garments of light, will be presented to God's people. Thus Satan will try to deceive, if possible, the very elect. Most seducing influences will be exerted; minds will be hypnotized.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, pp. 293

Notice the sequence: Superstitions assume new forms. Errors become pleasing. False theories are clothed with light. Seductive influences are exerted. Minds become captivated. The danger, therefore, is not simply that Satan will repeat the exact deceptions of the past. He will adapt them. The form changes. The underlying deception remains.

SATAN ADAPTS HIS DECEPTIONS TO THE HUMAN MIND

“Corruptions of every type, similar to those existing among the antediluvians, will be brought in to take minds captive. The exaltation of nature as God, the unrestrained license of the human will, the counsel of the ungodly—these Satan uses as agencies to bring about certain ends. He will employ the power of mind over mind to carry out his designs.” ibid., p. 293

This does not mean that every psychological influence is automatically spiritualism. Rather, the warning is that Satan can exploit human influence, persuasion, deception, and mental weakness to accomplish his purposes. He studies the human mind. He knows that different people can be reached through different avenues. Therefore his methods vary. What deceives one person may not deceive another. One person may be attracted by intellectual skepticism. Another by sensuality. Another by supernatural manifestations. Another by religious excitement. Another by philosophy. Another by desire for “new light.” Another by human personalities. Another by worldly success. The disguise changes according to the person.

THE MOST DANGEROUS DECEPTION: RELIGION WITHOUT GOD

And then we have one of the saddest observations:

“The most sorrowful thought of all is that under his deceptive influence men will have a form of godliness, without having a real connection with God.” ibid., p. 293

This brings us back to Paul's warning:
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” 2 Timothy 3:5

The danger is not necessarily atheism. The danger may be religion without a living connection with God. A person may: profess Christ, attend church, read the Bible, speak religious language, claim spiritual experiences, and yet be under deceptive influences. So, the question cannot simply be: “Is this religious?” But the question must be: “Is this according to the Word of God?”

THE DECEPTION BEGAN IN EDEN

The foundation of Satan's final deception reaches all the way back to Eden. God had clearly said:

• “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:17

• Satan contradicted God's Word: “Ye shall not surely die.” Genesis 3:4

This was the foundation of his deception.

“Long has Satan been preparing for his final effort to deceive the world. The foundation of his work was laid by the assurance given to Eve in Eden, ‘Ye shall not surely die.’ “In the day that ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Little by little he has prepared the way for his master-piece of deception in the development of Spiritualism. He has not yet reached the full accomplishment of his designs; but it will be reached in the last remnant of time, and the world will be swept into the ranks of this delusion.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 379

This is one of the foundational principles of the entire study. The first great lie was connected with death. God said: “Thou shalt surely die.” Satan said: “Ye shall not surely die.” The conflict therefore began with a direct contradiction of God's Word concerning the condition of man after death. This is why the doctrine of the natural immortality of the soul becomes so important when we later examine spiritualism. If a person already believes that the dead continue consciously living, Satan has a theological foundation upon which to build. The deception of Eden can then be developed into: communication with the dead, apparitions, mediumship, spirit manifestations, messages from departed loved ones , and ultimately “revelations” supposedly coming from the spirit world.

SPIRITUALISM IS NOT A NEW DECEPTION

The modern manifestations may look new. The terminology may change. The technology may change. The setting may change. The presentation may change. But the underlying lie is ancient. The first lie was: “Ye shall not surely die.” That lie can be dressed in many garments. But its foundation remains the same: Question God's Word. Accept another authority. Believe that what God has forbidden is harmless. Trust experience above revelation. Follow the supernatural rather than Scripture. This is why Isaiah gives such a fundamental principle:

• “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

The supernatural must be tested by Scripture. Experience must be tested by Scripture. Teachings must be tested by Scripture. Spiritual manifestations must be tested by Scripture.

SPIRITUALISM CAN WEAR THE GARMENTS OF LIGHT

“Satanic agencies are clothing false theories in an attractive garb, even as Satan in the Garden of Eden concealed his identity from our first parents by speaking through the serpent. These agencies are instilling into human minds that which in reality is deadly error. The hypnotic influence of Satan will rest upon those who turn from the plain word of God to pleasing fables.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 294

This is the essence of deception. The error is hidden beneath an attractive appearance. The critical phrase is: “turn from the plain word of God.” That is where the danger begins. When Scripture becomes insufficient, Satan can introduce another authority. When the plain Word becomes boring, complicated theories become attractive. When obedience becomes burdensome, pleasing doctrines become appealing. When truth involves self-denial, Satan offers a religion that requires less surrender. The deception becomes attractive because it allows the sinner to retain religion without the cross.

THE CROSS OF SELF-DENIAL IS THE GREAT TEST

As cited earlier, that the “the truth that involves a cross” is particularly important because Satan wants a religion without self-denial. Christ calls us to self-denial. Jesus said:

• “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24

The true gospel does not merely make us feel better. It calls us to die to self. It calls us to surrender sin. It calls us to obey God. It calls us to follow Christ. Therefore, a teaching that sounds spiritual but consistently removes the necessity of repentance, obedience, self-denial, and holiness should immediately be examined.

SATAN'S TARGET: THOSE WHO HAVE RECEIVED GREAT LIGHT

“It is those who have had the most light that Satan most assiduously seeks to ensnare. He knows that if he can deceive them, they will, under his control, clothe sin with garments of righteousness, and lead many astray.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 294

This is especially important for those who profess to be God's people. The greatest danger is not always an obvious enemy. Sometimes it is someone who knows enough truth to make error sound biblical. The error is then dressed in familiar language. Scripture may be quoted. Christ may be mentioned. God may be mentioned. The Holy Spirit may be mentioned. But beneath the religious language may be a teaching that undermines God's revealed truth.

WHAT DOES “SPIRITUALISM” INCLUDE?

Spiritualism in its classic sense involves communication with spirits or the supposed dead. But the broader satanic system is larger than one particular manifestation. The Bible warns us abominable practices in Deuteronomy 18:10-12 as mentionend earlier. Yet Satan's influence can also operate through deception, false teaching, sensuality, skepticism, fanaticism, and worldly fascination. But the word “witchcraft” involved more than formal occult ceremonies.

“WITCHCRAFT IS GOING ON AROUND US”

“In the associations of the vain, the proud, the mirthful, Satan presides, and is the chief mover in scenes of gayety. He is there in disguise. Witchcraft is going on around us on every hand, and the world and the church are under the influence of one who will lead them to do things they never dreamed of doing...”
“Every man, woman, and child that is not under the control of the Spirit of God is under the influence of Satan's sorcery, and by his words and example he will lead others away from the path of truth.” Youth's Instructor, November 16, 1893, pars. 9-10

Here is describing the sphere of Satan's influence, including deceptive and corrupting influences that operate through human associations and conduct. This does not mean that every person who attends a worldly social event is literally practicing occult magic. The warning is broader: Satan can work through human influence to lead people away from truth. That is why the Christian must guard associations, influences, entertainment, habits, and examples.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SPIRITUALISM ENTERS THE CHURCH?

This is where the warning becomes especially serious. We are told:
“As the teachings of spiritualism are accepted by the churches, the restraint imposed upon the carnal heart is removed, and the profession of religion will become a cloak to conceal the basest iniquity. A belief in spiritual manifestations opens the door to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and thus the influence of evil angels will be felt in the churches.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 421

Notice the sequence: When False teaching enters, then Biblical restraint is weakened, then sin becomes easier to justify, then religion becomes a cloak, and then seducing spirits gain influence. This is why spiritualism cannot be treated as merely a strange curiosity. Its ultimate purpose is separation from God and His truth.

“DEMON WORSHIP”

“Spiritualism declares that there is no death, no sin, no judgment, no retribution; that “men are unfallen demigods”; that desire is the highest law; and that man is accountable only to himself. The barriers that God has erected to guard truth, purity, and reverence, are broken down, and many are thus emboldened in sin. Does not such teaching suggest an origin similar to that of demon worship?” Signs of the Times, June 30, 1890

The question directs our attention to the true source of forbidden spiritual manifestations.

1 Corinthians 10:20 says: “But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to devils, and not to God.”

Therefore, the Bible does not treat false worship as spiritually neutral. Behind false worship can be an unseen spiritual power. This is precisely why God's people must not experiment with the supernatural apart from God's revealed Word.

HOW CAN THE DOOR BE SHUT?

We have seen how Satan seeks to enter. Now we need to know how the door can be closed. Sister White records a remarkable instruction:

“I saw that this door at which the enemy comes in to perplex and trouble the flock can be shut. I inquired of the angel how it could be closed. He said, "The church must flee to God's Word and become established upon gospel order, which has been overlooked and neglected.” Early Writings, p. 100

This is one of the most important statements in the entire study. What is the answer to spiritual deception? Not speculation. Not human wisdom. Not emotional excitement. Not chasing manifestations. Not searching for secret revelations. The answer is: “The church must flee to God's Word.” That must become one of the foundational principles of this study.

GOD'S WORD IS THE CLOSED DOOR

The enemy wants access to the mind. God gives His Word as a safeguard. The enemy brings confusion. God gives truth. The enemy introduces error. God gives Scripture. The enemy produces division. God establishes gospel order. The enemy seeks to captivate the mind. God calls us to: “Search the scriptures.” John 5:39

The Christian therefore must become Bible-established. Not merely Bible-acquainted. Not merely Bible-quoting. But established in Bible truth.

HOW DOES THE CHURCH OPEN THE DOOR?

Satan does not always force the door open. Sometimes human beings open it for him. One way is by giving influence to those who introduce confusing or unsound ideas.

“No sooner are erratic ideas started in his mind than Brother D begins to lose faith and to question the work of the Spirit which has been manifested among us for so many years. He is not a man who will entertain what he believes to be special light without imparting it to others; therefore it is not safe to give him influence that will enable him to unsettle other minds. It is opening a door through which Satan will rush in many errors to divert the mind from the importance of the truth for this time. Brethren, as an ambassador of Christ I warn you to beware of these side issues, whose tendency is to divert the mind from the truth. Error is never harmless. It never sanctifies, but always brings confusion and dissension.It is always dangerous. The enemy has great power over minds that are not thoroughly fortified by prayer and established in Bible truth.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 292

This is exactly the danger we are studying.

ERROR IS NEVER HARMLESS

That statement deserves to stand alone: “Error is never harmless.” Why? Because error does not remain isolated. One error can prepare the mind for another. A small departure can become a doorway to a larger departure. A person who accepts one unscriptural principle may become more willing to accept another. Eventually the foundation itself can be undermined. This is why Paul warned:

• “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Galatians 5:9

The danger is not merely the individual error. The danger is what that error prepares the mind to receive next.

FALSE TEACHERS ENTER PRIVILY

Peter gives a striking warning:

“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies.” 2 Peter 2:1

Notice the word: “privily.” The deception is not necessarily announced openly. False teachers may not say: “I am here to destroy your faith.” Instead, the error enters gradually. It may begin with: “I have discovered something new.” “The church has misunderstood this.” “Everyone else has been deceived.” “This is a higher revelation.” “We need to move beyond the old understanding.” Sometimes there may be legitimate questions. But when a person begins introducing teachings that undermine the plain Word of God, God's people must exercise discernment.

FALSE BRETHREN CAN ENTER UNAWARES

Paul gives another example:

• “And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage.” Galatians 2:4

Again: “unawares” and “privily.” The danger is subtle infiltration. The enemy's strategy is not always open confrontation. Sometimes the deception enters quietly. It gains trust. It gains influence. It gains acceptance. Then it begins changing the foundation.

THE DANGER OF “NEW LIGHT”

This is why God's people must be particularly cautious whenever someone presents teaching as extraordinary or superior revelation. There is nothing wrong with receiving greater understanding of Scripture. But new light must never contradict established biblical truth.

Isaiah gives the test:
“To the law and to the testimony.” Isaiah 8:20

John gives another:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” 1 John 4:1

Paul gives another:
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21

The principle is clear: Do not automatically accept because it is presented as spiritual. Test it. Prove it. Compare it with Scripture.

THE MARK OF SATAN'S DISGUISE

We can now identify several characteristics of Satan's disguised work.

1. IT CONTRADICTS OR WEAKENS GOD'S WORD

The original deception began: “Yea, hath God said?” Genesis 3:1

Satan first attacked confidence in God's Word.

2. IT APPEARS ATTRACTIVE

“False theories, clothed with garments of light.” 8T 293.4

Error does not advertise itself as error.

3. IT APPEALS TO THE DESIRE FOR SOMETHING NEW

The human heart can become fascinated with what appears mysterious, advanced, secret, or extraordinary.

4. IT BYPASSES SCRIPTURE

Instead of: “What saith the Lord?” the emphasis becomes: “What do I feel?” “What did I experience?” “What did the spirit tell me?” “What revelation did I receive?”

5. IT WEAKENS OBEDIENCE

Anything that ultimately makes God's commandments seem unnecessary is leading away from the true Spirit of God.

6. IT PRODUCES CONFUSION

“Error is never harmless. It never sanctifies, but always brings confusion and dissension.” T32 48.2 (Also in 5T 292.2)

7. IT CAN USE RELIGIOUS LANGUAGE

The enemy can speak about God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, love, unity, peace, spirituality, enlightenment, and even Scripture, while subtly introducing principles contrary to God's Word.

THE CENTRAL PRINCIPLE

We can therefore define spiritualism in this study more carefully that Spiritualism is not merely one particular occult practice. It belongs to a broader system of satanic deception in which the enemy seeks to gain access to the human mind, counterfeit the work of God, introduce error under an attractive appearance, and ultimately turn people away from the authority of God's Word. Its manifestations may vary. Its disguises may change. Its terminology may evolve. But its objective remains the same. Separate the soul from God.

THE SAFEGUARD

The answer is not fear. The answer is not obsession with Satan. The answer is not searching everywhere for demons. The answer is to become so established in God's truth that deception can be recognized.

Paul tells us:

• “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11

And what is one of the chief pieces of that armour?

• “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:17

The Word of God is our weapon. The Word of God is our test. The Word of God is our safeguard. The Word of God exposes the counterfeit.

THE FINAL WARNING

Satan's greatest deception will not necessarily look satanic. It may look spiritual. It may look intellectual. It may look scientific. It may look therapeutic. It may look progressive. It may look Christian. It may even appear to produce extraordinary experiences.

But the question remains: Does it agree with the plain Word of God?

If it does not, we must reject it.

For Satan's first deception began with questioning what God had plainly said. And the final conflict will again involve the question of whose word we will believe.

God says: “Thus saith the LORD.”
Satan says: “Ye shall not surely die.”

God calls us to: faith, truth, obedience, holiness, and life.
Satan calls us toward: doubt, deception, disobedience, and death.

Therefore, God's people must “flee to God's Word.” They must become established in Scripture. They must test every spirit. They must test every doctrine. They must test every manifestation. They must test every teacher. They must test every claimed revelation. And they must never forget:
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

The next question, therefore, is not merely whether spiritualism exists.

The more important question is: HOW CAN WE RECOGNIZE MODERN SPIRITUALISM WHEN IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THE SPIRITUALISM OF THE PAST?

MODERN SPIRITUALISM IDENTIFIED

Part 1: Nos. 1-4

The preceding sections established that Satan does not always present his deceptions in an openly satanic form. He can change his appearance, adopt religious language, appeal to the emotions, and even profess to honour Christ and the Bible while undermining their authority. We now come to the practical question: How can modern spiritualism be identified?

The following characteristics are especially important. They should not be viewed as isolated doctrines, but as interconnected principles by which Satan seeks to separate the human mind from Christ, Scripture, and obedience.

1. SPIRITUALISM LAYS ASIDE JESUS AS THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH AND PUTS ANOTHER HEAD

The first and most fundamental characteristic is a rejection of Christ's headship. The Bible plainly teaches:

“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:18

Christ is not merely an important member of the church. He is its Head. The church does not belong to man. It belongs to Christ.

• Paul says: “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church.” Ephesians 5:23

• And again: “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” Ephesians 4:15

Therefore, whenever a spiritual system causes people to move away from Christ as the supreme Head and places another authority in His position, something fundamental has gone wrong.

The Testimonies gives a striking description:
“Vain philosophy. The members of the body are controlled by the head. Spiritualists lay aside the Head and believe that all the members of the body must act themselves and that fixed laws will lead them on in a state of progression to perfection without a head... Spiritualism is a lie. It is founded upon the great original lie, ‘Ye shall not surely die.’ Thousands cut off the Head, and the result is the members act without Jesus for their head, and another guides the body. Satan controls them.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 300-301

This is a profound principle. The issue is not merely communication with spirits. The deeper issue is authority. Who is the Head? Who directs the body? Who determines truth? Who determines right and wrong? Who determines the destiny of man? Who determines the way to salvation? If Christ is displaced, something else must take His place. And Satan's ultimate objective is to occupy the position that belongs only to Christ.

CHRIST MUST REMAIN THE HEAD

Paul describes the church as a body:
“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.” 1 Corinthians 12:12

The body does not independently determine its direction. The head directs the body. Likewise, God's people must remain connected with Christ.

Jesus said: “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit.” John 15:5

The Christian life is therefore not: “I will determine my own spiritual path.” It is: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” That was Paul's question after his conversion: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” Acts 9:6

This is the opposite of the independent spirit that Satan seeks to cultivate.

THE FIRST LIE AND THE REJECTION OF CHRIST

Notice the connection: “Spiritualism is a lie. It is founded upon the great original lie, ‘Ye shall not surely die.’”

The original lie did more than introduce a false teaching about death. It introduced a new authority.
God had said: “Thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:17
Satan said: “Ye shall not surely die.” Genesis 3:4
Eve therefore had a choice between God's Word and another voice. That same conflict continues. Whenever another voice becomes more authoritative than God's Word, the principle of Eden is being repeated.

2. SPIRITUALISM BELIEVES IN MAN'S CONSCIOUSNESS IN DEATH

This brings us to the second identifying characteristic. The doctrine that human beings remain consciously alive after death provides the theological foundation upon which spiritualism can operate. The Bible gives a completely different picture.

Solomon wrote: “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing.” Ecclesiastes 9:5

David wrote concerning death: “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” Psalm 146:4

The dead do not return to communicate with the living.

Job asked: “So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.” Job 14:12

The Bible repeatedly presents death as a sleep from which the person awaits the resurrection.

Jesus said concerning Lazarus: “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.” John 11:11

When the disciples misunderstood Him, Jesus explained plainly: “Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.” John 11:14

The hope of the Christian is therefore not communication with the dead. It is the resurrection. Paul wrote: “For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible.” 1 Corinthians 15:52

THE IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL - A FOUNDATION OF MODERN SPIRITUALISM

The Spirit of Prophecy explains the connection:

“The doctrine of natural immortality has prepared the way for modern Spiritualism. If the dead are admitted to the presence of God and holy angels, and privileged with knowledge far exceeding what they before possessed, why should they not return to the earth to enlighten and instruct the living? How can those who believe in man's consciousness in death reject what comes to them as divine light communicated by glorified spirits? Here is a channel regarded as sacred, through which Satan works for the accomplishment of his purposes. The fallen angels who do his bidding appear as messengers from the spirit world. While professing to bring the living into communication with the dead, Satan exercises his bewitching influence upon their minds.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 370

That is the logical progression. If the dead are already consciously alive in heaven, then it becomes easy to believe that they can return. If they can return, then perhaps they can communicate. If they can communicate, perhaps they can give instruction. If their messages appear supernatural, perhaps they should be accepted as divine. This is why the doctrine of the state of the dead is not a minor theological question. It concerns the source of spiritual authority.

WHY GOD FORBIDS COMMUNICATION WITH THE DEAD

The Bible does not merely say that communication with the dead is impossible. It also explicitly forbids attempts to seek supernatural guidance through the dead or through familiar spirits.

• God said: “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 19:31

• “And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul.” Leviticus 20:6

Why such a strong prohibition? Because God Himself is the source of truth. He does not want His people receiving instruction from forbidden spiritual agencies.

3. SPIRITUALISM MAKES NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND SIN

The third identifying characteristic is extremely important. Spiritualism destroys the biblical distinction between righteousness and sin.

"But none need be deceived by the lying claims of Spiritualism. God has given the world sufficient light to enable them to discover the snare. If there were no other evidence, it should be enough for the Christian that the spirits make no difference between righteousness and sin, between the noblest and purest of the apostles of Christ and the most corrupt of the servants of Satan." Spirit of Prophecy, Vol 4, p 375

This is an important point. According to Scripture, character matters. God does not teach that everyone enters heaven regardless of how he lived.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says, "Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

SATAN'S MESSAGE: “LIVE AS YOU PLEASE”

The Spirit of Prophecy explains the danger of the spiritualistic teaching:

"By representing the basest of men as in Heaven, and highly exalted there, Satan virtually declares to the world, No matter how wicked you are; no matter whether you believe or disbelieve God and the Bible. Live as you please; Heaven is your home." ibid., p 375

This strikes at the very foundation of biblical morality. If everyone is ultimately saved regardless of character, why repent? Why overcome sin? Why obey God? Why fear the judgment? Why keep God's commandments? Why seek holiness? Why deny self? The answer is that the Bible teaches none of these things are unnecessary.

GOD DOES MAKE A DISTINCTION BETWEEN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND SIN

The apostle John writes:
“He that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil.” 1 John 3:7-8

There is a distinction. God calls His people out of sin. He does not call sin righteousness.

Isaiah warned:
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” Isaiah 5:20

This is one of the great characteristics of the last days: the reversal of moral categories. What God calls sin is declared acceptable. What God calls righteousness is declared oppressive. What God calls holiness is declared legalism. What God calls obedience is declared bondage. What God calls liberty is declared intolerance. This is exactly why the Christian must remain anchored in Scripture.

THE SPIRITS CONTRADICT THE BIBLE

Continuing the quote, it adds another critical point:

"Moreover, the apostles, as personated by these lying spirits, are made to contradict what they wrote at the dictation of the Holy Spirit when on earth. They deny the divine origin of the Bible, and thus tear away the foundation of the Christian's hope, and put out the light that reveals the way to Heaven." ibid., p 375

This is a decisive test. Suppose a supposed spirit claims to be Paul. But that spirit teaches something contrary to Paul's writings. What should we conclude? We do not change Scripture to accommodate the spirit. We reject the spirit.

Paul himself gave the test:
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8

Notice how strong that is. Even if the messenger claims to be: “an angel from heaven” the message must still be tested against the revealed Word. The messenger is not the authority. God's Word is the authority.

THE BIBLE IS THE FOUNDATION

And continues:

"They deny the divine origin of the Bible, and thus tear away the foundation of the Christian's hope, and put out the light that reveals the way to Heaven." ibid., p 375

This is the real objective. Satan wants to destroy confidence in Scripture. Because once Scripture loses its authority, another authority can take its place. That is why the battle over spiritualism is ultimately a battle over: Who will we believe? God? Or another voice?

4. SPIRITUALISM USES LOVE DEGRADED TO SENTIMENTALISM

The fourth characteristic is subtler. Spiritualism can use the language of love while removing the biblical distinction between truth and error.

"Spiritualism is now changing its form, veiling some of its more objectionable and immoral features, and assuming a Christian guise. Formerly it denounced Christ and the Bible; now it professes to accept both." Spirit of Prophecy, Vol 4, p 405

This is a crucial statement for our study. Notice: “assuming a Christian guise.” The deception becomes harder to detect because it looks Christian. The enemy does not necessarily say: “Reject Christ.” He may say: “We accept Christ-but let us reinterpret what Christ taught.” He does not necessarily say: “Reject the Bible.” He may say: “We accept the Bible-but its difficult passages must be understood differently.” The appearance remains Christian. But the substance has changed.

A FALSE CONCEPTION OF THE LOVE OF GOD

It continues:

“The Bible is interpreted in a manner that is attractive to the unrenewed heart, while its solemn and vital truths are made of no effect.” ibid, p 405

This is a tremendously important warning. The problem is not the doctrine of God's love. God is love. The problem is presenting love in such a way that God's justice, holiness, and law disappear.

Proverbs 3:12 declares: “For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth.”

God's love does not mean that He approves of sin. Christ's love does not mean that sin does not matter. Grace does not mean that obedience is unnecessary. Mercy does not mean that God's law has been abolished.

GOD'S LOVE AND GOD'S LAW

John writes: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” 1 John 5:3

That verse destroys the false separation between love and obedience. Biblical love does not abolish God's commandments. It produces obedience.

Jesus said: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

Therefore, Love without truth becomes sentimentalism. Grace without repentance becomes presumption. Faith without obedience becomes empty profession. Religion without holiness becomes a form of godliness without power.

THE GOD OF LOVE IS ALSO THE GOD OF JUSTICE

It identifies precisely what spiritualism hides:

“A God of love is presented; but his justice, his denunciations of sin, the requirements of his holy law, are all kept out of sight.” ibid, p 405

This is a counterfeit picture of God. The Bible presents both: God's mercy and God's justice. Both are true. The cross itself demonstrates this. God did not simply ignore sin. Christ died because sin is serious.

Romans 3:25 says “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness.”

The cross demonstrates both the love of God and the seriousness of sin.

PLEASING FABLES

Then continues:

“Pleasing, bewitching fables captivate the senses of those who do not make God's word the foundation of their faith.” ibid, p 405

Notice the progression: God's Word is neglected. Then, Fables become attractive. Then, The senses become captivated. And then, Truth becomes secondary. This connects directly with Paul's warning:

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:34

The danger is not merely that people will believe obvious lies. They will believe pleasing lies. The deception succeeds because it tells people what they want to hear.

CHRIST CAN BE REJECTED WHILE HIS NAME IS RETAINED

And then concludes:

“Christ is as verily rejected as before; but Satan has so blinded the eyes of the people that the deception is not discerned.” ibid, p 405

This is perhaps the most important warning in this section. He can use the name Jesus and still reject the authority of Jesus. He can speak about love and still reject God's law. He can speak about grace and still excuse sin. He can quote Scripture and still undermine Scripture. He can profess Christianity while accepting principles that originated with the enemy. Therefore, the test is not: “Does it mention Jesus?” The test is: “Does it lead people to the Jesus of Scripture?” The test is not: “Does it talk about love?” The test is: “Is that love governed by the truth of God's Word?” The test is not: “Does it claim to be spiritual?” The test is: “Is it of the Spirit of God?”

John gives the command:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” 1 John 4:1

THE FOUR IDENTIFYING MARKS

We can now summarize the first four characteristics.

1. SPIRITUALISM DISPLACES CHRIST AS HEAD

Instead of Christ directing the body, another authority takes His place. “He is the head of the body, the church.” Colossians 1:18

2. SPIRITUALISM ACCEPTS CONSCIOUSNESS IN DEATH

The lie: “Ye shall not surely die.” Genesis 3:4 becomes the foundation for supposed communication with the dead.

3. SPIRITUALISM BLURS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND SIN

It can teach: “Live as you please; Heaven is your home.” But Scripture says: “Sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4

4. SPIRITUALISM USES SENTIMENTAL LOVE TO HIDE TRUTH

It presents a God of love while hiding: God's justice, God's hatred of sin, God's holy law, repentance, judgment, and obedience. Thus the counterfeit becomes attractive to the unrenewed heart.

THE CENTRAL TEST

These four points already give us a powerful test. Whenever a spiritual teaching, movement, manifestation, or philosophy appears, ask: Does it exalt Christ as the Head? Does it agree with the biblical teaching concerning death? Does it preserve the distinction between righteousness and sin? Does it uphold God's law while presenting God's love? If it fails these tests, we should not accept it merely because it appears spiritual, loving, supernatural, progressive, or Christian.

Paul gives us the governing principle:
“For no man can lay a foundation other than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11

And Christ Himself said:
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17

The true Spirit will never lead us away from the true Christ, the true Word, or the true distinction between righteousness and sin. And this is precisely where the next characteristics of modern spiritualism become increasingly important: Satan's counterfeit does not merely deny truth openly. It seeks to replace truth with a more attractive, more sentimental, more supernatural, and apparently more enlightened substitute.

MODERN SPIRITUALISM IDENTIFIED

Part 2: Nos. 5-8

The first four characteristics showed that spiritualism seeks to displace Christ, deny the biblical state of the dead, blur the distinction between righteousness and sin, and present a sentimental form of Christianity that hides God's justice and law.

We now advance to four additional characteristics. These are especially important because they reveal that spiritualism is not merely about séances, apparitions, or occult practices. At its deeper level, it is a system of deception that undermines judgment, divine law, church order, and confidence in God's revealed truth.

5. SPIRITUALISM TEACHES THAT THERE IS NO PUNISHMENT FOR THE SINNER

One of the most dangerous features of spiritualism is the teaching that sin has no ultimate consequence.

The message may take different forms:

• Everyone will eventually be saved.
• God is too loving to punish sin.
• There is no final judgment.
• The wicked will automatically be restored.
• Character does not determine destiny.
• Heaven is ultimately the home of everyone, regardless of how they live.

But the Bible gives a solemn warning. Isaiah describes those who make themselves secure in rebellion against God:
“Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us.” Isaiah 28:15

The Spirit of Prophecy applies this prophecy directly to the deception that there will be no punishment for sin:

“The prophet Isaiah brings to view the fearful deception which will come upon the wicked, causing them to count themselves secure from the judgments of God.” [quoted Isaiah 28:15]. In the class here described are included those who in their stubborn impenitence comfort themselves with the assurance that there is to be no punishment for the sinner; that all mankind, it matters not how corrupt, are to be exalted to heaven, to become as the angels of God. But still more emphatically are those making a covenant with death and an agreement with hell, who renounce the truths which Heaven has provided as a defense for the righteous in the day of trouble, and accept the refuge of lies offered by Satan in its stead—the delusive pretensions of spiritualism." Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 377

THE LIE OF SECURITY

The danger is not merely that people deny punishment. The greater danger is that the denial produces false security. If there is no judgment, there is no urgency to repent. If there is no consequence for sin, there is no reason to overcome sin. If everyone is automatically destined for heaven, then the distinction between the converted and the unconverted disappears.

But,
2 Corinthians 5:10 says, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.”

And,
Romans 14:12 “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

The Bible therefore does not teach universal moral impunity. There is a judgment. There is accountability. There is a separation between righteousness and wickedness.

THE JUDGMENT IS REAL

Jesus Himself taught that there will be a separation:
“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” Matthew 25:46

The book of Revelation presents the final judgment in unmistakable language:
“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened.” Revelation 20:12

The Bible therefore does not permit us to accept a doctrine that says: “It does not matter how you live.” God's grace is abundant, but grace never makes sin harmless.

THE DEATH PENALTY AND CHURCH ORDER

The Testimonies then raises an important question concerning God's government and order, when it says:

“Brethren, never allow anyone's ideas to unsettle your faith in regard to the order and harmony which should exist in the church.”

And then refers to the organization of the ancient tabernacle and the seriousness with which God required His appointed work to be carried out. Many of you do not see all things clearly. The directions in regard to order in the tabernacle service were recorded that lessons might be drawn from it by all who should live upon the earth. Men were selected to do various parts of the work of setting up and taking down the tabernacle, and if one strayed in carelessly and put his hands to the work assigned to another, he was to be put to death. We serve the same God today. But the death penalty has been abolished; had it not been, there would not now be so much careless, disorderly work in His cause. The God of heaven is a God of order, and He requires all His followers to have rules and regulations, and to preserve order. All should have a perfect understanding of God's work.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 274

A NECESSARY DISTINCTION

This quotation's point is not that the church possesses authority to execute people. It clearly says: “The death penalty has been abolished.” The continuing principle is that God has not abolished order, discipline, accountability, or church government. God's church is not meant to be governed by individual independence and confusion.

Paul wrote:
“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.” 1 Corinthians 14:33
“Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1 Corinthians 14:40

Therefore, Christian liberty must not be confused with spiritual lawlessness.

CHRIST GAVE HIS CHURCH A SYSTEM OF DISCIPLINE

Jesus gave explicit instruction concerning church discipline. He said:
“Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone.” Matthew 18:15

Then He gave successive steps when the matter is not resolved. Finally:
“And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church.” Matthew 18:17

Jesus then said:
“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 18:18

The Testimonies explains:

“The world's Redeemer has invested great power with His church. He states the rules to be applied in cases of trial with its members. After He has given explicit directions as to the course to be pursued, He says: "Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever [in church discipline] ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Thus even the heavenly authority ratifies the discipline of the church in regard to its members when the Bible rule has been followed. The word of God does not give license for one man to set up his judgment in opposition to the judgment of the church, neither is he allowed to urge his opinions against the opinions of the church. If there were no church discipline and government, the church would go to fragments; it could not hold together as a body.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, p. 428

THE BIBLICAL BALANCE

This does not mean that every church decision is automatically correct. The qualification is crucial: “when the Bible rule has been followed.” The church must remain under Scripture. Christ is the Head. The Bible is the standard. Church discipline must therefore be exercised according to God's Word, not human preference.

This brings us back to our first characteristic: Christ must remain the Head.

CHRIST'S PRESENT WORK IN THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY

The question of spiritualism also becomes especially significant when we understand Christ's present ministry.

The Spirit of Prophecy states:
“Those who by faith follow Jesus in the great work of the atonement, receive the benefits of his mediation in their behalf; but those who reject the light that brings to view this work of ministration, are not benefited thereby... When Jesus at his ascension entered by his own blood into the heavenly sanctuary to shed upon his disciples the blessings of his mediation, the Jews were left in total darkness, to continue their useless sacrifices and offerings. The ministration of types and shadows had ceased. That door by which men had formerly found access to God, was no longer open. The Jews had refused to seek him in the only way whereby he could then be found, through the ministration in the sanctuary in Heaven. Therefore they found no communion with God. To them the door was shut. They had no knowledge of Christ as the true sacrifice and the only mediator before God; hence they could not receive the benefits of his mediation.
The condition of the unbelieving Jews illustrates the condition of the careless and unbelieving among professed Christians, who are willingly ignorant of the work of our merciful High Priest. In the typical service, when the high priest entered the most holy place, all Israel were required to gather about the sanctuary, and in the most solemn manner humble their souls before God, that they might receive the pardon of their sins, and not be cut off from the congregation. How much more essential in this anti-typical day of atonement that we understand the work of our High Priest, and know what duties are required of us.” ibid, p. 270 Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 270

This is particularly important in a study of spiritualism. Why? Because Satan's counterfeit ministry attempts to divert the human mind from the true ministry of Christ. Christ is our true Mediator. Christ is our High Priest. Christ is our Advocate. Christ is our Head. Therefore, any supposed spiritual communication that directs the mind toward another mediator, another source of revelation, another authority, or another method of salvation is counterfeit.

1 Timothy 2:5 says: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

6. SPIRITUALISM TEACHES SOME TRUTHS MIXED WITH ERRORS

This is one of Satan's most effective methods. He does not necessarily present 100 percent error. He can present: truth + error and make the mixture appear trustworthy.

“The pretended visitants from the world of spirits sometimes utter cautions and warnings which prove to be correct. Then, as confidence is gained, they present doctrines that directly undermine faith in the Scriptures. With an appearance of deep interest in the well-being of their friends on earth, they insinuate the most dangerous errors. The fact that they state some truths, and are able at times to foretell future events, gives to their statements an appearance of reliability; and their false teachings are accepted by the multitudes as readily, and believed as implicitly, as if they were the most sacred truths of the Bible. The law of God is set aside, the Spirit of grace despised, the blood of the covenant counted an unholy thing. The spirits deny the deity of Christ and place even the Creator on a level with themselves. Thus under a new disguise the great rebel till carries on this warfare against God, begun in heaven and for nearly six thousand years continued upon the earth.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 370

So, Satan's strategy is to mix truth with error to gain confidence and then introduce dangerous doctrines. A correct statement establishes confidence. Once confidence has been established, the deception can proceed. This is the crucial point. The first message may be true. The second may be partly true. The third may sound plausible. But eventually the deception attacks the foundation. We must remember: A supernatural manifestation does not prove that its message is from God. The ability to produce a sign is not the biblical test. God Himself warned:
"If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass... saying, Let us go after other gods... thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet." Deuteronomy 13:1-3

The sign may occur. The prediction may appear accurate. The supernatural manifestation may be impressive. But the message must still be tested by God's revealed truth.

THE GREAT TEST

Isaiah 8:20 gives the rule: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” That is the safeguard. Not: “Was it supernatural?” But: “Does it agree with God's Word?” Not: “Did the prediction come true?” But: “Does the teaching agree with Scripture?” Not: “Did the person appear loving?” But: “Does the message lead to obedience to God?”

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE MIXTURE IS ACCEPTED?

It describes the ultimate result:

“The law of God is set aside, the Spirit of grace despised, the blood of the covenant counted an unholy thing.” ibid, p. 370

Notice the progression. First: God's law is set aside. Then: God's grace is despised. Then: Christ's sacrifice is degraded. The deception eventually attacks the entire plan of salvation.

It continues:
“The spirits deny the deity of Christ and place even the Creator on a level with themselves.” ibid, p. 370

The counterfeit therefore attacks Christ Himself. This takes us back to our first point. Spiritualism ultimately seeks to displace Christ.

Then concludes:
“Thus under a new disguise the great rebel still carries on this warfare against God, begun in heaven and for nearly six thousand years continued upon the earth.” ibid, p. 370

The word “disguise” is significant. The warfare continues, but the appearance changes.

7. SPIRITUALISM BREAKS DOWN THE BARRIERS GOD HAS ERECTED

The next characteristic concerns God's moral boundaries.

“The barriers that God has erected to guard truth, purity, and reverence are broken down, and many are thus emboldened in sin.” Signs of the Times, June 30, 1890

This gives us three things that God's barriers protect:

1. TRUTH God establishes what is true.
2. PURITY God establishes what is morally clean.
3. REVERENCE God establishes how humanity should relate to Him.

Satan seeks to tear down all three. When truth is weakened, error enters. When purity is weakened, sin becomes acceptable. When reverence is weakened, sacred things become common.

GOD'S LAW IS A BOUNDARY

God's commandments are not arbitrary restrictions. They are protective boundaries.

• Psalm 19:7 “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul.”
• Psalm 119:32 “I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.”

The law protects the relationship between God and man and between human beings themselves. Therefore, when a teaching encourages people to disregard God's commandments, it is not giving greater freedom. It is removing a divine safeguard.

THE CONNECTION WITH DEMON WORSHIP

We are asked:
“Does not such teaching suggest an origin similar to that of demon worship?” Signs of the Times, June 30, 1890

That question is significant. The issue is not merely whether someone openly bows before a demon. Demon worship can also operate through deception, false teaching, moral corruption, and the removal of God's restraints. Paul gives a similar warning:
1 Timothy 4:1 “But the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”

The deception is doctrinal before it becomes openly demonic.

8. SPIRITUALISM IS LIKE THE SIN OF REBELLION

The eighth characteristic takes us directly into the biblical definition of rebellion.

Samuel told Saul:
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” 1 Samuel 15:23

This is a remarkable connection. Samuel does not say: “Rebellion is similar to an innocent mistake.” He compares rebellion with: witchcraft. And stubbornness with: idolatry. Why? Because both involve the rejection of God's authority in favour of another authority.

SAUL'S SIN

What had Saul actually done? God had given him a command. Saul did something else. Then he attempted to justify himself. He said:

• “Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD.” 1 Samuel 15:20

But his actions contradicted his claim. Samuel answered:

• “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22

Then came the explanation:

• “Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” 1 Samuel 15:23

The issue was therefore not merely the outward act. The deeper issue was rejection of God's Word.

REBELLION AND SPIRITUALISM HAVE A COMMON PRINCIPLE

The connection becomes clear and that when God speaks, man rejects God's Word. And man chooses another authority then another voice takes God's place. That is the underlying principle of spiritualism. It is ultimately a question of authority. God says: “Thus saith the LORD.” The counterfeit says: “Another voice says…” And when that other voice is accepted over God's Word, rebellion has entered.

THE FOUR ADDITIONAL MARKS AT A GLANCE

We have now identified Nos. 5-8:

5. NO PUNISHMENT FOR SIN

Spiritualism offers false security by teaching that everyone will ultimately be exalted regardless of character. Biblical truth: There is judgment, accountability, and a final separation between righteousness and wickedness.

6. TRUTH MIXED WITH ERROR

Satan may allow correct statements, accurate warnings, or impressive manifestations to establish confidence before introducing destructive error. Biblical safeguard: “To the law and to the testimony.” Isaiah 8:20

7. GOD'S MORAL BARRIERS ARE BROKEN DOWN

Spiritualism removes the restraints that protect: truth, purity, and reverence. The result is increased boldness in sin.

8. REBELLION IS CONNECTED WITH WITCHCRAFT

Samuel declared: “Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” 1 Samuel 15:23 The common principle is rejection of God's authority.

THE DEVELOPING PATTERN

When Nos. 1-8 are placed together, a much clearer picture emerges.

1. Christ is displaced as Head.
2. The biblical teaching concerning death is rejected.
3. The distinction between righteousness and sin is blurred.
4. God's love is separated from His justice and law.
5. Judgment and punishment are denied.
6. Truth is mixed with error.
7. God's protective barriers are removed.
8. Rebellion against God's Word is normalized.

This is why spiritualism must be understood as more than an occult practice. At its heart is a rebellion against God's authority. It seeks to substitute another head, another voice, another standard, another hope, and eventually another Christ. And that is why the Christian's only safe position is the one expressed by Jesus: “It is written.” Matthew 4:4, 7, 10

For Satan can counterfeit signs. He can counterfeit voices. He can counterfeit messages. He can counterfeit religious experiences. He can even clothe error in the language of Christianity. But he cannot change what God has already spoken. “The word of our God shall stand for ever.” Isaiah 40:8

9. SPIRITUALISM TEACHES INDEPENDENCE FROM GOD

At the very beginning of human history, Satan presented the temptation of independence from God. He told Eve that “Ye shall be as gods.” Genesis 3:5

We have identified the deeper principle behind Satan's temptation:

“Your eyes,” said Satan, pointing to the tree, “shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods,”—independent. This had been the aim of Satan; this was why he fell from his high and holy estate." Youth's Instructor, July 1, 1897, par. 5

This is one of the foundational principles of spiritualism: Man does not need to remain dependent upon God. Instead: Man can become his own authority. Man can determine his own truth. Man can determine his own morality. Man can determine his own destiny. Man can act independently of God's government. That was Satan's ambition in heaven. And that same spirit was introduced into Eden.

THE FIRST LIE WAS AN INVITATION TO INDEPENDENCE

Notice Satan's argument carefully: “Ye shall be as gods.” The temptation was not simply: "Eat the fruit." It was: "Become something greater." "Step beyond God's appointed boundary." "Do not remain dependent upon His Word." "You can determine for yourself what is good and evil." This is why the temptation was so powerful. Satan was offering Eve self-government instead of God's government. But there was already something profoundly wrong with the proposition. Humanity had already been created in God's image.

• “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Genesis 1:26

Adam and Eve did not need Satan's promise to become what God had already designed them to be. The issue was not that humanity lacked God's image. The issue was that humanity was tempted to seek equality with God through independence from God.

CREATED IN GOD'S IMAGE-BUT NOT GOD

This distinction is extremely important that man was created in God's image but man was never created to be God.

"Created to be “the image and glory of God” (1 Corinthians 11:7), Adam and Eve had received endowments not unworthy of their high destiny. Graceful and symmetrical in form, regular and beautiful in feature, their countenances glowing with the tint of health and the light of joy and hope, they bore in outward resemblance the likeness of their Maker. Nor was this likeness manifest in the physical nature only. Every faculty of mind and soul reflected the Creator’s glory. Endowed with high mental and spiritual gifts, Adam and Eve were made but “little lower than the angels” (Hebrews 2:7), that they might not only discern the wonders of the visible universe, but comprehend moral responsibilities and obligations." Education, p. 20

Therefore, being created in God's image does not mean possessing God's equality, authority, omniscience, or deity. There is an infinite distinction between: RESEMBLING GOD and BEING GOD. The first was God's purpose. The second was Satan's ambition.

SATAN'S GRAND AMBITION

Isaiah records Satan's proud declaration:
“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” Isaiah 14:14

This is the spirit of rebellion. Satan did not want merely to serve God. He wanted to exalt himself. He wanted God's position. He wanted God's authority. He wanted God's government. And that same principle was brought to humanity through the temptation: “Ye shall be as gods.”

CAN MAN EQUAL GOD? Absolutely not.

We may reflect God's character, but we can never become equal with God.

“You cannot equal the copy; but you can resemble it and, according to your ability, do likewise.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 170

“We cannot equal the example [Christ], but we should copy it.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 628

That distinction should be emphasized in this study that God calls us to become like Christ in character, not to become gods in nature or authority.

THE GREAT DECEPTION OF INDEPENDENCE

This is why spiritualism is so dangerous. It can appear to be teaching liberty when it is actually teaching independence from God. It can appear to be teaching enlightenment when it is actually teaching rejection of revelation. It can appear to be teaching self-realization when it is actually teaching self-exaltation. It can appear to be teaching freedom when it is actually removing the authority of God's law.

But true Christian liberty is not independence from God. Jesus said that true liberty is found in obedience to God:

• “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32

True freedom is found in Christ, not apart from Christ.

10. SPIRITUALISM TEACHES THAT GOD IS AN ESSENCE PERVADING ALL NATURE

Another form of spiritualistic deception is pantheism-the teaching that God is an impersonal essence or presence pervading nature.

“Already there are coming in among our people spiritualistic teachings that will undermine the faith of those who give heed to them. The theory that God is an essence pervading all nature is one of Satan's most subtle devices. It misrepresents God and is a dishonor to His greatness and majesty. Pantheistic theories are not sustained by the word of God. The light of His truth shows that these theories are soul-destroying agencies. Darkness is their element, sensuality their sphere. They gratify the natural heart and give license to inclination. Separation from God is the result of accepting them.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 291

This is a crucial point. If God is merely an impersonal essence permeating nature, then the distinction between Creator and creation is destroyed. But Scripture maintains that distinction, Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The Creator is not creation. God made nature. God is not merely nature.

WHY THIS IS SPIRITUALLY DANGEROUS

Pantheism can sound deeply religious. It may speak about God being everywhere, divine presence, spiritual consciousness, unity with nature, divine energy, universal life, enlightenment. But Christianity does not teach that God is an impersonal force. God is personal. He speaks. He commands. He loves. He judges. He forgives. He communicates with His creatures. And most importantly, He has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ.

• Hebrews 1:1-2 says, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son.”

A NECESSARY CAUTION ABOUT "GOD IN MAN"

This is where the deception becomes especially subtle. The Bible teaches that God can dwell in His people through His Spirit.

• Colossians 1:27 says, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

But this does not mean that man is himself God. There is a vast difference between, God dwelling in His people and God being identical with His creation. The first is biblical. The second destroys the Creator-creature distinction.

THE QUESTION OF "YE SHALL BE AS GOD"

The connection with Genesis 3 is therefore important. Satan's original temptation: “Ye shall be as gods.” Modern spiritualistic philosophy can develop the same principle in a more sophisticated form: "The divine is already within you." "You possess divine consciousness." "You are essentially divine." "You are your own authority." "You determine your own truth." The terminology may change. The underlying principle remains: Independence from the authority of God.

11. SPIRITUALISM HAS DONE AWAY WITH THE NECESSITY OF THE ATONEMENT

This is perhaps one of the most serious consequences of spiritualistic philosophy. If man is inherently divine... If man possesses an immortal consciousness... If man is accountable only to himself... If sin is merely an illusion... If there is no real judgment... If man can perfect himself... then what need is there for a Saviour? What need is there for the cross? What need is there for an atonement? What need is there for a High Priest?

This is exactly where the Testimonies' warning becomes powerful.

“These theories, followed to their logical conclusion, sweep away the whole Christian economy. They do away with the necessity for the atonement and make man his own savior.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 291

That is the heart of the deception.

SPIRITUALISM SAYS: Man can save himself.
THE GOSPEL SAYS: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8

Spiritualism exalts man.
The Gospel exalts Christ.
Spiritualism makes man his own saviour.
The Gospel declares: “Neither is there salvation in any other.” Acts 4:12

THE ATONEMENT CANNOT BE REMOVED WITHOUT DESTROYING THE GOSPEL

The Bible's entire plan of salvation centers on Christ's sacrifice.

• Colossians 1:14 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
• Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”
• 1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.”

Remove the atonement, and the Christian system collapses. Remove Christ's sacrifice, and there is no biblical foundation for forgiveness. Remove Christ's mediation, and there is no biblical basis for our confidence before God.

THE SANCTUARY AND THE ATONEMENT

This is why the sanctuary doctrine becomes critically important in the final conflict. We have a solemn warning:

“Our ministering brethren were looking on, watching what was being done, but they did not seem to understand. The foundation of our faith, which was established by so much prayer, such earnest searching of the Scriptures, was being taken down, pillar by pillar. Our faith was to have nothing to rest upon—the sanctuary was gone, the atonement was gone...” Manuscript 46, May 18, 1904

The sanctuary and the atonement are not minor subjects. They are connected to Christ's present ministry. The sanctuary points us to: Christ's sacrifice, Christ's priesthood, Christ's mediation, Christ's judgment, and Christ's final work for His people. Therefore, any teaching that removes the atonement or makes Christ's mediatorial ministry unnecessary is moving directly away from the biblical plan of salvation.

12. SPIRITUALISM DIVERTS THE MIND FROM THE GREAT TRUTHS

The Testimonies gives another identifying characteristic:

“...whose study it is to divert minds from the great truths given to prepare them for what is coming upon the world.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 292

This is a vital principle for the last days. Satan does not always have to convince people to believe an obvious falsehood. Sometimes he merely has to keep them preoccupied with something else. That is enough.

THE STRATEGY OF DIVERSION

Imagine a person who is studying: Christ's character, the law of God, the Sabbath, the sanctuary, the investigative judgment, the gospel, the second coming, Christian character, preparation for the final crisis. Satan's strategy may be: “Give them another subject.” Give them endless speculation. Give them sensational experiences. Give them strange manifestations. Give them controversial theories. Give them mystical experiences. Give them spiritualistic teachings. Give them endless arguments. Give them anything that will prevent them from studying the truths that prepare them for Christ's coming. The problem is not merely that people believe error. Sometimes the problem is that they stop studying truth.

SATAN WANTS THE MIND DIVERTED

The apostle Paul warned:
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3

Notice the battleground: THE MIND. Satan wants to corrupt the mind. He wants to confuse the mind. He wants to occupy the mind. He wants to redirect the mind. He wants to keep the mind away from Christ. This connects directly with the earlier quotation:

“The great deceiver hopes so to confuse the minds of men and women that none but his voice will be heard.” Letter 244, 1907

Therefore, what occupies our minds matters.

THE GREAT TRUTHS ARE PREPARATORY

The statement says that these are: “the great truths given to prepare them for what is coming upon the world.” This is extremely significant. God has not given prophecy merely to satisfy curiosity. He has given truth to prepare character.

Jesus said: "And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” Mark 13:37

The purpose of prophecy is preparation. The purpose of the sanctuary is preparation. The purpose of the gospel is preparation. The purpose of the law is preparation. The purpose of the judgment message is preparation. And the purpose of the present truth is to prepare God's people to stand faithful to Christ.

13. SPIRITUALISM TEACHES FREE-LOVE OR UNHOLY SPIRITUAL LOVE

Spiritualism does not necessarily present itself as openly immoral at first. Sometimes the danger is hidden beneath religious language. The Testimonies described this experience:

“I have seen the results of these fanciful views of God, in apostasy, spiritualism, and free-lovism. The free love tendency of these teachings was so concealed that at first it was difficult to make plain its real character. Until the Lord presented it to me, I knew not what to call it, but I was instructed to call it unholy spiritual love.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 292

The important expression is: “unholy spiritual love.” This is a counterfeit of genuine Christian love. Biblical love is not lawless. Biblical love does not excuse sin. Biblical love does not destroy marriage. Biblical love does not redefine adultery as spirituality. Biblical love does not make feelings the final authority.

• Philippians 1:9 says, “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment.”

Notice the connection: Love + knowledge + judgment. Christian love must operate within the boundaries of God's truth.

LOVE WITHOUT LAW IS NOT CHRISTIAN LOVE

The world frequently defines love as: “If you feel it, it must be right.” But Scripture gives another standard.

• John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
• 1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.”

Therefore: True love does not abolish God's law. True love fulfills God's law.

• Romans 13:10 says, “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

This means that any spiritual teaching that uses "love" to justify adultery, fornication, sexual immorality, or violation of God's commandments is not genuine Christian love. It is a counterfeit.

AN EXTREME EXAMPLE: MAN-MADE TESTS

The Testimonies gives a remarkable example of how fanaticism can become connected with this kind of deception.

“Whenever I have been called to meet fanaticism in its varied forms, I have received clear, positive, and definite instruction to lift my voice against its influence. With some the evil has revealed itself in the form of man-made tests for ascertaining a knowledge of the will of God; and I was shown that this was a delusion which became an infatuation, and that it is contrary to the will of the Lord. If we follow such methods, we shall be found aiding the enemy's plans. In times past certain among the believers had great faith in the setting of signs by which to decide their duty. Some had such confidence in these signs that men went so far as to exchange wives, thus bringing adultery into the church.” Letter 36, 1911 (2SM 28)

This deserves careful attention. God has given us His Word. We do not need mystical tests to replace Scripture. We do not need arbitrary signs to discover whether God approves something that His Word already condemns.

• Psalm 119:105 says: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

WHEN SIGNS REPLACE THE WORD

Notice the extreme result ofhow some believers had placed great confidence in signs to determine their duty, that “men went so far as to exchange wives, thus bringing adultery into the church.” This example is extremely sobering. It demonstrates that religious experience is not automatically divine simply because it feels spiritual. A person can be deeply convinced. A person can sincerely believe he has received divine guidance. A person can even point to a supposed sign. And yet the conclusion can be completely contrary to God's Word. Therefore: Experience must be tested by Scripture. Feelings must be tested by Scripture. Signs must be tested by Scripture. Spiritual manifestations must be tested by Scripture. The prophet Isaiah gives the standard: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

14. SPIRITUALISM TEACHES THAT THOSE ONCE SANCTIFIED COULD NOT SIN

Another dangerous teaching is the claim that once a person has reached a certain spiritual experience, sin becomes impossible. And we are warned of this teaching:

“The Lord gave me strength to lay plainly before them their danger. Among other views they held that those who were once sanctified could not sin.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 293

This doctrine creates an extremely dangerous spiritual condition. Why? Because once a person believes: “I cannot sin,” he may stop examining himself. He may stop watching. He may stop praying. He may stop accepting reproof. He may become unwilling to recognize his own faults. And that very attitude can become evidence that the person is no longer walking humbly before God.

THE DANGER OF SELF-JUSTIFICATION

Job expressed the problem beautifully:
“If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.” “Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul; I would despise my life.” Job 9:20-21

Job's statement illustrates an important principle: The closer we come to God, the less room there is for spiritual boasting. The genuinely sanctified person does not stand before God proclaiming: “I have arrived.” Rather, he recognizes his complete dependence upon Christ.
Paul expressed this spirit: “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect.” Philippians 3:12
Even after years of Christian experience, Paul did not boast: “I cannot sin.” Instead, he continued to press toward Christ.

CHRISTIAN GROWTH NEVER JUSTIFIES SELF-EXALTATION

This does not mean that Christian character development is impossible. Quite the opposite. God calls His people to holiness.

• 1 Peter 1:15 “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation.”
• Matthew 5:48 “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

But biblical perfection does not mean: “I have reached a condition in which I am incapable of sinning.” It means that the Christian is continually surrendered to God and growing in harmony with His will.

THE EXAMPLE OF ENOCH

What, then, should be the ambition of the Christian? Not: “I want people to recognize how perfect I am.” But: “I want to please God.”

“Be ambitious, for the Master's glory, to cultivate every grace of character. In every phase of your character building you are to please God. This you may do; for Enoch pleased Him though living in a degenerate age. And there are Enochs in this our day.” Christ's Object Lessons, p. 332

This gives us the proper emphasis. Not self-exaltation. Not self-confidence. Not a claim of sinlessness. But character development for the glory of God.

The Bible says:

• Hebrews 11:6“But without faith it is impossible to please him.”
• Genesis 5:24“Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”

Enoch's life was characterized by walking with God, not boasting about himself.

15. SPIRITUALISM WILL UNITE PAPISTS, PROTESTANTS, AND WORLDLINGS

We now come to one of the most important prophetic characteristics in the entire study.

“The line of distinction between professed Christians and the ungodly is now hardly distinguishable. Church members love what the world loves and are ready to join with them, and Satan determines to unite them in one body and thus strengthen his cause by sweeping all into the ranks of spiritualism. Papists, who boast of miracles as a certain sign of the true church, will be readily deceived by this wonder-working power; and Protestants, having cast away the shield of truth, will also be deluded. Papists, Protestants, and worldlings will alike accept the form of godliness without the power, and they will see in this union a grand movement for the conversion of the world and the ushering in of the long-expected millennium.” Spirit of Prophecy, Vol 4, p 406.

This is a remarkable prophetic picture.

THE THREE GROUPS
The quotation identifies three broad classes:

1. PAPISTS Representing Roman Catholicism.
2. PROTESTANTS Those who have abandoned the biblical safeguards that originally distinguished Protestantism.
3. WORLDLINGS Those who do not necessarily profess Christianity but can nevertheless participate in the religious-political movement.

The objective is unity. But unity by itself is not proof of God's approval.

UNITY MUST BE BUILT UPON TRUTH

The Bible teaches unity.

Jesus prayed: “That they all may be one.” John 17:21. But Christian unity is not unity at the expense of truth. Jesus also prayed: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17

The order is significant: TRUTH leads to SANCTIFICATION leads to UNITY, not UNITY leads to TRUTH.
We cannot take doctrines that contradict Scripture, combine them together, and then call the resulting union the unity for which Christ prayed.

THE FORM OF GODLINESS WITHOUT THE POWER

The phrase from the quotation is particularly important: “The form of godliness without the power.” 2 Timothy 3:5

There can be: churches without conversion, religion without obedience, worship without surrender, profession without character, miracles without truth, unity without biblical foundation. Therefore, the Christian must not ask only: “Does this look religious?” The question must be: “Does this agree with the Word of God?”

MIRACLES ARE NOT THE FINAL TEST

This is especially important in the context of spiritualism. It says that spiritualistic manifestations will include: “miracles” and “many undeniable wonders.” The Bible gives the same warning. Revelation speaks of deceptive supernatural manifestations: “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles.” Revelation 16:14
Therefore, supernatural power does not automatically establish divine authority. The final test remains God's Word.

16. SPIRITUALISM REVEALS ITSELF IN CHARACTER

The final characteristic in this section takes spiritualism from the realm of doctrine into everyday life. The Testimonies gives a surprisingly broad description:

“When men reveal the opposite traits, when they are proud, vain, frivolous, worldly-minded, avaricious, unkind, censorious, we need not be told with whom they are associating, who is their most intimate friend. They may not believe in witchcraft; but, notwithstanding this, they are holding communion with an evil spirit.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 225

This does not mean that every person who displays a sinful character trait is consciously practicing occultism. Rather, it is identifying the spiritual source and influence behind persistent, cherished traits that are contrary to Christ. The question is: Whose character is being reproduced?

CHARACTER REVEALS THE SOURCE

Consider the list: "proud, vain, frivolous, worldly-minded, avaricious, unkind, censorious." These characteristics are not merely personality quirks. When deliberately cherished, they reveal a heart under the influence of the wrong spirit. Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit.

• “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies...” Galatians 5:19-20

Then comes the contrast:

• “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance.” Galatians 5:22–23

The issue is therefore larger than whether someone has ever participated in an occult practice. The deeper question is: What spirit is shaping the character?

CHRIST OR SATAN?

The Christian life is a battle over character. Christ desires to reproduce His character in His people. Satan seeks to reproduce his character. Jesus said: “By their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:20
That is why character is such an important identifying mark. A person may claim: “I have nothing to do with spiritualism.” But if he deliberately cherishes pride, hatred, cruelty, selfishness, worldliness, and censoriousness, he is allowing an influence that is contrary to Christ. The question is not simply: “What do I profess?” but it is: “What spirit is controlling my life?”

The contrast can be summarized simply.
THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST PRODUCES:
Love, Humility, Purity, Self-control, Patience, Kindness, Mercy, Obedience
THE SPIRIT OF SATAN PRODUCES:
Pride, Self-exaltation, Worldliness, Covetousness, Harshness, Censoriousness, Rebellion, Lawlessness
Therefore, spiritual warfare is not merely about what we believe intellectually. It is also about what kind of character we are developing.

BREAKING SATAN’S SPELLS

From Deception to Deliverance

The preceding section examined how spiritualism works, the forms it may assume, and the ways Satan seeks to captivate the human mind. But recognizing the deception is not enough. A person may know that a snare exists and yet remain trapped in it. The important question is therefore: How can a person who has come under Satan’s influence be delivered?

The Bible gives us the answer.

• “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36

Our deliverance does not come through human strength, intellectual ability, or merely determining to do better. It comes through Christ. But Christ's power works in cooperation with a surrendered human will.

I. THE CONSEQUENCES OF YIELDING TO SATAN'S SPELL

Before considering how to escape, we need to understand how serious the danger is. Satan's deceptions are not harmless. They affect the judgment, understanding, faith, usefulness, and ultimately the relationship of the soul with Christ.

1. A PERSON MAY BECOME UNFIT TO TEACH THE FLOCK

There's a solemn warning concerning those who have been deeply involved in serious errors:

“God will not entrust the care of His precious flock to men whose mind and judgment have been weakened by former errors that they have cherished, such as so-called perfectionism and Spiritualism, and who, by their course while in these errors, have disgraced themselves and brought reproach upon the cause of truth. Although they may now feel free from error and competent to go forth and to teach this last message, God will not accept them. He will not entrust precious souls to their care; for their judgment was perverted while in error, and is now weakened. The great and holy One is a jealous God, and He will have holy men to carry His truth. The holy law spoken by God from Sinai as a part of Himself, and holy men who are its strict observers will alone honor Him by teaching it to others.” Early Writings, p 101-102

This is a serious principle. There is a difference between: being forgiven by God and being immediately restored to every position of responsibility. God can forgive a person completely while allowing time for the consequences of past errors to be healed and for judgment and character to be tested. The apostle Paul gives the principle concerning spiritual leadership:

• “Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.” 1 Timothy 3:6

The issue is not merely knowledge. It is character, judgment, stability, and proven faithfulness.

2. THE WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING MAY BE IMPAIRED

Satan does not merely seek to influence what a person believes. He seeks to corrupt the person's ability to reason correctly.

“Satan works with marvelous success through his agents, and all who yield to their influence are subject to a bewitching power that destroys the wisdom of the wise and the understanding of the prudent.” Signs of the Times, December 13, 1883, par. 12

This explains why deception can become so difficult to escape. The person is not merely fighting an external argument. The very faculties by which he evaluates the argument may have become confused. This is why Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the renewal of the mind.

• Romans 12:2 says “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

3. FAITH IN CHRIST CAN BE DESTROYED

The most serious consequence is not merely confusion. It is the loss of confidence in Christ.

“The teachers of spiritualism come in a pleasing, bewitching manner to deceive you, and if you listen to their fables you are beguiled by the enemy of righteousness and will surely lose your reward. When once the fascinating influence of the archdeceiver overcomes you, you are poisoned, and its deadly influence adulterates and destroys your faith in Christ's being the Son of God, and you cease to rely on the merits of His blood. Those deceived by this philosophy are beguiled of their reward through the deceptions of Satan.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 298

This is the heart of the danger. Satan's ultimate objective is not simply to make people interested in strange teachings. His objective is to separate them from Christ. The battlefield is therefore fundamentally about faith.

• Ephesians 6:16 says: “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”

II. CAN A PERSON BREAK FREE?

Yes, but not through human strength alone, and there is the terrible danger of deliberately entering Satan's territory.

“I was shown that Satan cannot control minds unless they are yielded to his control. Those who depart from the right are in serious danger now. They separate themselves from God and from the watchcare of His angels, and Satan, ever upon the watch to destroy souls, begins to present to them his deceptions. Such are in the utmost peril; and if they see and try to resist the powers of darkness and to free themselves from Satan's snare, it is not an easy matter. They have ventured on Satan's ground, and he claims them. He will not hesitate to engage all his energies and call to his aid all his evil host to wrest a single human being from the hand of Christ. Those who have tempted the devil to tempt them will have to make desperate efforts to free themselves from his power.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 301

Satan seeks consent. He seeks cooperation. He seeks an opening. Those who have deliberately placed themselves in Satan's way may have to make, “desperate efforts to free themselves from his power.” This does not mean that Satan is stronger than Christ. It means that sin and deception must not be deliberately cherished. The person must turn away from the enemy and turn toward Christ.

III. THE WORD OF GOD BREAKS THE SPELL

There is a beautiful bridge between the problem and the solution that the word of God breaks Satan's spell. The Bible is the source of truth, and truth is the only thing that can break deception. Satan deceives through lies. God delivers through truth.

• Jesus said: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

Notice that freedom comes through truth. And where is truth found?

• Jesus prayed: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17

Therefore, the path to freedom doesn't lie in trading one lie for another, but in breaking deception with truth, finding Christ, and entering into complete freedom.

IV. HOW DO WE BREAK FREE FROM SATAN'S SPELLS?

1. BY FAITH IN CHRIST

This must come first.

You may inquire, What is a man to do who is desirous of breaking the spell of Satan’s power? Become truly penitent, and confess your backsliding. Of yourself you have no power to overcome. Your only hope is to break the spell. You must die to your ambitious desire to do great things. You must be born again. Earnest prayer to Christ for unison with your brethren would bring to you power from above to break the spell. But the spell can never be broken by you alone. You have given yourself up to the seductive teachings of the enemy, thinking that you were in the light, and you have not yet broken the spell. You are not to confine yourself to prayer, but working with your prayers are to make decided efforts to correct that which is wrong... If you could see your peril, you might be helped, but a deceptive power holds you captive. Break the spell through belief in Christ. Place yourself under the shield of His protection. Lay hold of His power. This is your only hope." Letter 269, 1904

This is the foundation of the entire section. We cannot defeat Satan by ourselves. We need Christ. Jesus said, “Without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5 Notice the balance. It does not say: “Simply pray and do nothing.” It says, “You are not to confine yourself to prayer, but working with your prayers are to make decided efforts to correct that which is wrong.” Therefore: Prayer + repentance + faith + decided action.

2. BY AWAKENING FROM SPIRITUAL HELPLESSNESS

You can only break the spell of the enemy by arousing yourself from your helplessness, by training your mind to dwell upon cheerful and hopeful subjects. Take the position that you are not your own, but that you are God’s property bought at an infinite price. “Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s.” [1 Corinthians 6:20.] Everyone who truly believes receives the Holy Spirit, and there is manifest truth of His working when the character is transformed. This miracle gives to the world a testimony of the grace and power of God. Letter 19, 1895

This is an important principle concerning the mind. The Christian must not continually surrender his thoughts to darkness, fear, discouragement, bitterness, or temptation. Paul gives the corresponding biblical principle:

• “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report… think on these things.” Philippians 4:8

But notice that it does not simply say: “Think positive thoughts.” The foundation is much deeper. The mind becomes transformed when the person recognizes that "I belong to God."

3. BY EARNEST EFFORT AND PERSEVERING PRAYER

The battle cannot be won through spiritual passivity.

“Satan has come down in great power, knowing that his time is short. His angels are busy, and a great share of the people of God suffer themselves to be lulled to sleep by him. The cloud again passed over, and settled upon the church. I saw that it would be only by earnest effort and persevering prayer that this spell would be broken.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 178.4

This is why the Christian must not become spiritually sleepy. Jesus warned: “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.” Matthew 26:41
Notice the two commands: WATCH. PRAY. Not one without the other.

4. BY A DETERMINED EFFORT

There comes a moment when a person must make a definite decision.

“I call upon those who have been connected with these binding influences to break the yoke to which they have long submitted, and stand as free men in Christ. Nothing but a determined effort will break the spell that is upon them.”Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 2, p. 16 (1SM 197)

This is not salvation by human works. It is decisive cooperation with divine grace. God supplies the power. We must choose to surrender. Joshua said, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” Joshua 24:15 There are moments when spiritual indecision becomes itself a decision.

5. BY RECEIVING THE WHOLE BIBLE

This is one of the strongest statements in the entire section.

Our only safety is in receiving the whole Bible, not taking merely detached portions, but believing the whole truth. Your feet are upon sliding sand if you depreciate one word that is written. The Bible is a divine communication, and is as verily a message to the soul as though a voice from heaven were heard speaking to us. With what awe and reverence and humiliation should we come to the searching of the Scriptures, that we may learn of eternal realities. When the spell of Satan is broken, and the Bible becomes to us the living word of God, we shall be safe in following our convictions of duty; for if we watch unto prayer, they will be inspired by the Spirit of God. Let everyone study the Bible, knowing that the word of God is as enduring as the eternal throne. If you come to the study of the Scriptures in humility, with earnest prayer for guidance, angels of God will open to you its living realities; and if you cherish the precepts of truth, they will be to you as a wall of fire against the temptations, delusions, and enchantments of Satan."Signs of the Times, September 18, 1893

That principle is essential in a study about spiritual deception. Why? Because Satan himself quoted Scripture to Christ. The problem was not that Satan had no Bible texts. The problem was that he misused Scripture. Jesus answered: “It is written again.” Matthew 4:7 The word “again” is important. One text must not be isolated from the whole counsel of God. Paul therefore says: “Rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

THE WHOLE BIBLE, NOT DETACHED PORTIONS

This connects directly with Psalm 119:
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11
The Word hidden in the heart becomes a protection against deception.

6. BY CONFESSION OF WRONGDOING

Sin cannot be defeated while it is being defended.

“If those whose errors are pointed out make confession of their wrongdoing, the spell of the enemy may be broken.” PH116 7.1; Letter 225, 1906

• Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

Notice the two elements: CONFESS and FORSAKE. Confession without forsaking is incomplete. And forsaking without confession often leaves the heart unwilling to acknowledge the truth. The gospel calls us to both.

7. BY ENGAGING IN MISSIONARY WORK

Sometimes spiritual sluggishness is strengthened by spiritual inactivity.

“My brethren and sisters, do you desire to break the spell that holds you? Would you arouse from this sluggishness that resembles the torpor of death? Go to work, whether you feel like it or not. Engage in personal effort to bring souls to Jesus and the knowledge of the truth. In such labor you will find both a stimulus and a tonic; it will both arouse and strengthen. By exercise your spiritual powers will become more vigorous, so that you can with better success work out your own salvation.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 387

This does not mean that activity earns salvation. Rather, Christian service helps break the cycle of self-absorption, inactivity, and spiritual lethargy. Jesus said: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations.” Matthew 28:19 A Christian who has received light is called to share that light.

8. BY COOPERATION BETWEEN DIVINE POWER AND HUMAN EFFORT

Here is the proper balance. Neither: “I can overcome by myself.” nor: “God will do everything while I do nothing.”

“Divine power is to co-operate with human effort to break the spell of worldly enchantment that the enemy has cast upon souls.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 56

This is the biblical principle of cooperation.

• Philippians 2:12-13 says, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” But he immediately explains: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

We work because God is working in us.

9. BY CLINGING FIRMLY TO JESUS

The final answer is not simply: “Know more about Satan.” It is: Know Christ. We study Satan's methods so that we may recognize his deceptions—but our eyes must ultimately be fixed upon Jesus. And we have given the beautiful illustration:

“No enchantment against Jacob, nor divination against Israel, will prevail. If your soul is riveted to the eternal Rock, you are safe.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 368

And what is that Rock? Paul tells us:

• “For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” 1 Corinthians 10:4

Therefore, the safest place is not merely knowing about the enemy. It is being riveted to Christ.

BEWARE OF SATAN'S AGENTS

Introduction - Recognizing the Instruments of Deception

After showing how Satan's spells operate and how the soul may be delivered from them, the study must now address another serious question: Through whom does Satan attempt to introduce these deceptions? The Bible does not teach us to fear every person, nor to become suspicious of everyone who disagrees with us. But it does repeatedly warn God's people to discern teachers, doctrines, influences, and spiritual manifestations.

Paul gives a direct warning:

• Philippians 3:2 “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.”
• Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

The issue is therefore not merely who a person claims to be, but what influence and teaching he brings. And we are given the same warning:

“We still see the deceptive working of Satan on every side. God would have us plant our feet firmly upon the platform of His truth, that we may not be deceived by ... Satan's wonderful representations.” Letter, October 6, 1906 (UL 293)

The believer therefore needs both: Christian love and Christian discernment.

I. WHO ARE SATAN'S AGENTS?

One category specifically identified in this study is those who employ deceptive spiritual influences while presenting themselves as religious teachers or ministers.

“Satanic agencies are clothing false theories in an attractive garb, even as Satan in the Garden of Eden concealed his identity from our first parents by speaking through the serpent. These agencies are instilling into human minds that which in reality is deadly error. The hypnotic influence of Satan will rest upon those who turn from the plain word of God to pleasing fables.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 294

There are two principles here that should not be separated.
1. Satan disguises error.
2. The plain Word of God is the safeguard.

Therefore, the fundamental question is not: “Is this preacher impressive?” but: “Is this teaching in harmony with the plain Word of God?” Isaiah gives the test:

• “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

II. HOW CAN A FALSE TEACHER CAST A DECEPTIVE INFLUENCE?

The material gives several examples. But an important clarification should be made at the outset: Not every emotional response, physical reaction, healing, or persuasive sermon is evidence of hypnotism or satanic influence. The point of these testimonies is that counterfeit spiritual manifestations can occur, and God's people must not automatically identify every supernatural or unusual manifestation as the work of the Holy Ghost. The final test remains:

• “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21

1. THROUGH PREACHING, PRAYING, OR CONVERSATION

The Spirit of Prophecy records an experience involving professed Adventists who had rejected what she regarded as present truth:

“I saw that Satan was working through agents in a number of ways. He was at work through ministers who have rejected the truth and are given over to strong delusions to believe a lie that they might be damned. While they were preaching or praying, some would fall prostrate and helpless, not by the power of the Holy Ghost, but by the power of Satan breathed upon these agents, and through them to the people. While preaching, praying, or conversing, some professed Adventists who had rejected present truth used mesmerism to gain adherents, and the people would rejoice in this influence, for they thought it was the Holy Ghost. Some even that used it were so far in the darkness and deception of the devil that they thought it was the power of God, given them to exercise. They had made God altogether such a one as themselves and had valued His power as a thing of nought.” Early Writings, p. 43-44

This is a powerful warning against a very dangerous assumption: “If something supernatural happens during a religious meeting, it must be the Holy Spirit.” The Bible never gives us that rule.

Jesus warned:
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders.” Matthew 24:24
Paul likewise warned of:
“lying wonders” 2 Thessalonians 2:9

Therefore, A manifestation is not the test of truth. A miracle is not the test of truth. A strong emotional experience is not the test of truth. The Word of God is the test.

THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES NOT CONTRADICT THE WORD

This point is essential. The Holy Ghost inspired Scripture. Therefore, the Holy Ghost will never lead someone into a doctrine that contradicts Scripture.

• Jesus said:
  “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13

The Spirit is called: “the Spirit of truth.” Therefore, a supposed spiritual manifestation that leads people away from biblical truth cannot be accepted merely because the manifestation is powerful.

2. THROUGH COUNTERFEIT HEALINGS AND MIRACLES

The next warning concerns supernatural claims of healing.

“Men under the influence of evil spirits will work miracles. They will make people sick by casting their spell upon them, and will then remove the spell, leading others to say that those who were sick have been miraculously healed. This Satan has done again and again.” Letter 259, 1903 (2SM 53)

The important lesson is that a claimed healing does not automatically prove divine intervention. The Bible warns that Satan can counterfeit supernatural signs.

• Revelation 16:14 says,“For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles.”

This is why spiritual discernment is essential.

WHAT METHODS MAY BE USED?

We are also warned about certain claims connected with supernatural healing:

“Satanic agents claim to cure disease. They attribute their power to electricity, magnetism, or the so-called sympathetic remedies, while in truth they are but channels for Satan's electric currents. By this means he casts his spell over the bodies and souls of men." Signs of the Times, March 24, 1887 (Ev 609)

The point of the statement is the spiritual agency claimed behind certain deceptive healing practices. The broader principle is: Do not accept a spiritual claim simply because someone appears to have supernatural healing power. The question remains: What is the source? What is being taught? Does it lead people to Christ and obedience to God's Word?

MIRACLES MUST BE TESTED

The Bible gives us a sobering principle through the experience of Pharaoh's magicians. Moses performed God's miracle, and the magicians were able to counterfeit some of the signs. See Exodus 7:10-12. Therefore, supernatural ability alone cannot establish divine authority. Deuteronomy gives the principle: “Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams.” Deuteronomy 13:3 Even when a sign appears to occur, God's revealed truth remains the standard.

3. THROUGH PERSONAL CONTACT AND IMPROPER INFLUENCE

The third example is more subtle. It concerns the influence that one person may exert upon another through conversation, manner, physical contact, emotional attachment, and personal fascination. Sister White relates an experience in which a woman requested a private interview with her. During the conversation:

“A sister of one of these men requested a private interview with me. She had much to say concerning entire consecration to God, and endeavored to draw out my views in regard to this subject. While talking, she held my hand in hers, and with the other softly stroked my hair. I prayed that angels of God might protect me from the unholy influences which this attractive young woman was seeking to exercise over me with her fair speeches and gentle caresses. She had much to say in regard to the spiritual attainments and great faith of her brother. Her mind seemed to be very much occupied with him and his experience. I felt that I must be guarded in what I said, and was glad when the interview was ended.” Signs of the Times, May 11, 1876, par. 10 (LS 81)

The lesson here should be stated carefully. This quotation is not teaching that ordinary human touch is inherently occult or that every affectionate gesture is a satanic spell. The context is one of deliberate personal influence, emotional persuasion, religious fascination, and inappropriate physical familiarity. The principle is therefore: Be discerning about influences that seek to bypass reason and conscience and gain control through emotional or sensual attachment.

THE POWER OF MORAL ATMOSPHERE

The Testimonies gives another important principle:

“If the moral atmosphere surrounding persons is not pure and sanctified, but is tainted with corruption, those who breathe this atmosphere will find that it operates almost insensibly upon the intellect and heart to poison and to ruin. It is dangerous to be conversant with those whose minds naturally take a low level.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 3, p. 125

This connects directly with Paul's warning: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” 1 Corinthians 15:33
The influence may be gradual. That is precisely what makes it dangerous. A person may not consciously decide: “I am going to become worldly.” Instead, repeated exposure gradually changes what seems normal.

THE POWER OF ASSOCIATION

The Bible gives the same warning:

• “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Proverbs 13:20
• “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.” Psalm 1:1

Notice the sequence: walketh then, standeth, then sitteth. First there is association. Then familiarity. Then acceptance. Then identification. This is why Satan does not always need to persuade someone immediately. Sometimes he simply needs to change the person's environment and associations.

THE PRINCIPLE OF INFLUENCE

The Bible teaches that influence works in both directions.

• Galatians 5:9 says: “Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?”

A small influence can eventually affect the whole person. That is why we must ask: What am I watching? What am I listening to? Whose teaching am I absorbing? Who is shaping my thinking? What relationships are influencing my spiritual life? What entertainment is training my imagination? What teachers am I allowing to interpret Scripture for me? What spiritual manifestations am I accepting without testing them?

SATAN'S AGENTS MAY NOT LOOK LIKE SATAN

This is perhaps the most important lesson in this section. Satan does not normally advertise himself as Satan.

• 2 Corinthians 11:14 says: “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

Therefore, the danger is not necessarily someone who looks openly evil. The danger may come through: a religious teacher, a persuasive speaker, a miracle worker, a spiritual counsellor, a popular author, a trusted friend, a fascinating personality, or even a person claiming to have special spiritual light. That is why John commands: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” 1 John 4:1

THE FINAL TEST: “AFTER CHRIST”

Colossians 2:8 gives us perhaps the best summary:
“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

The ultimate issue is: IS IT AFTER CHRIST? Not: Is it popular? Not: Is it supernatural? Not: Does it produce strong emotions? Not: Does everyone accept it? Not: Does the speaker claim special revelation? But: Is it after Christ?

HOW TO TEST A CLAIMED SPIRITUAL AGENT

Before accepting a teacher, manifestation, or spiritual influence, ask:

1. Does it agree with the Bible? Isaiah 8:20
2. Does it exalt Christ? John 12:32; John 16:14
3. Does it uphold God's law? Romans 3:31
4. Does it lead to obedience? John 14:15
5. Does it produce the fruit of the Spirit? Galatians 5:22-23
6. Does it promote holiness? Hebrews 12:14
7. Does it withstand biblical examination? Acts 17:11
8. Does it direct attention to Scripture rather than to the personality of the teacher? John 5:39
9. Does it preserve the distinction between truth and error? Isaiah 5:20
10. Does it bring the soul closer to Christ rather than dependence upon the human agent? 1 Corinthians 2:5

A CRITICAL BALANCE

This section should not teach God's people to become paranoid about other people. The Bible does not call Christians to suspect everyone. It calls them to discern. There is a difference between: discernment and suspicion, separation from error and hatred of people, testing doctrine and attacking individuals.

Jesus commanded:
“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you.” Matthew 5:44

But Christian love does not require accepting error. Paul could love people while warning against false teachers. Therefore: LOVE THE PERSON. TEST THE TEACHING. REJECT THE ERROR. FOLLOW CHRIST.

OUR SAFEGUARDS

Satan does not merely seek to deceive the world. He especially seeks to deceive those who profess to follow Christ. Therefore, God has not left His people without protection. He has given us His Word, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, prayer, godly counsel, Christian principles, and the truths necessary for our time. Our safety is not found in human wisdom, experience, personality, or confidence in ourselves. Our safety is in Christ and in obedience to the truth He has revealed.

• 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

The following safeguards are essential.

1. DISCERN BETWEEN BIBLE TRUTH AND FABLES

One of Satan's most effective methods is to mix truth with error. He does not always come with an obvious denial of Christianity. He may present error in religious language, with impressive arguments, attractive experiences, or even apparently spiritual manifestations. Therefore, God's people must learn to distinguish truth from error.

“The only way for such poor souls to overcome Satan, is to discern between pure Bible truth and fables.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 344

The Bible gives us the standard:
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

We should never accept a teaching merely because:
• it sounds spiritual;
• it produces an emotional experience;
• a preacher presents it persuasively;
• many people believe it;
• miracles appear to accompany it;
• or it claims to bring new light.

The question must always be: Does it agree with the Word of God?
Revelation 3:18 says, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.”

We need spiritual discernment for we are warned:

“As human beings, we are subject to the crafty wiles and temptations of this fallen foe. And unless we are kept by the power of Christ, we shall certainly be led away by the satanic sophistries by which the world is flooded. Our safety is to lean not on human power, on the arm of flesh, but upon the divine arm. Those who are partakers of the divine nature will not be beguiled by Satan.” Letter 172, May 15, 1907, (UL 149)

Therefore, ask God for spiritual eyesight. Do not merely ask, “Is this interesting?” Ask: “Is this true?” Do not merely ask: “Does this person seem sincere?” Ask: “Does this teaching agree with Scripture?”

2. NEVER SACRIFICE CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLE

Discernment must lead to decision. It is not enough to recognize error. We must refuse to participate in it.

“Never, never yield to the temptation to sacrifice Christian principle in order to meet the world's criterion. Be firm, be faithful, for you are bought with a price.” Letter 48, June 1, 1898 (UL 166)

There will be times when obedience to God brings inconvenience, misunderstanding, rejection, financial loss, or separation from those who refuse to obey the truth. But the Christian must never purchase peace at the price of principle.

“Choose poverty, reproach, separation from friends, or any suffering rather than to defile the soul with sin. Death before dishonor or the transgression of God's law should be the motto of every Christian.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 5, p. 147

This is the opposite of Satan's principle. Satan's principle is: Compromise in order to gain. Christ's principle is: Obey God regardless of the cost. The three Hebrew worthies understood this principle. They were not willing to compromise even when threatened with death.

• Daniel 3:17-18 “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods.”

The safest person in a time of deception is not the person who knows the most theories. It is the person who has already settled the question: “I will obey God.”

3. PRAYERFULLY STUDY GOD'S WORD AND PRACTICALLY APPLY IT

Our safeguard against Satan is not merely possessing a Bible. We must study it, believe it, and obey it.

• Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Notice the sequence: God's Word leads to light, then direction, to obedience. The Word is not merely information. It is God's instrument for directing the life.

“We must all now seek to arm ourselves for the contest in which we must soon engage. Faith in God's word, prayerfully studied and practically applied, will be our shield from Satan's power and will bring us off conquerors through the blood of Christ.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 2, p. 302

Notice the two elements: Prayerfully studied We need the Holy Spirit to illuminate our understanding. Practically applied We must obey what God reveals. A person may know hundreds of Bible verses and still be deceived if he refuses to practice what those verses teach.

• James 1:22 says: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

Satan is not afraid merely because we possess Bibles. He is threatened when the Bible possesses our hearts and directs our lives.

4. PUT YOUR TRUST IN THE LORD

Human beings are easily influenced by fear. Fear of rejection. Fear of losing friends. Fear of losing position. Fear of financial hardship. Fear of what people may say. Satan can use these fears as a snare.

“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.” Proverbs 29:25

Our ultimate confidence must not be in men. Not in a preacher. Not in a denomination. Not in a church leader. Not in a movement. Not even in our own judgment. Our confidence must be in the Lord and His revealed Word.

“Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm...” Jeremiah 17:5

But:

“Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.” Jeremiah 17:7

This does not mean that we reject godly counsel. It means that human counsel must never replace God's Word.

5. LET GOD CONTROL YOUR LIFE

The opposite of Satan's spell is surrender to God. Satan's deception began with the promise: “Ye shall be as gods.” Genesis 3:5

The principle was independence from God. The Christian principle is the opposite: “Lord, control my life.” David prayed:

• “Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.” Psalm 119:117

Notice the connection between being held up by God and respecting His statutes. True freedom is not freedom from God's government. True freedom is freedom from Satan's government. Paul writes:

• “For sin shall not have dominion over you.” Romans 6:14
  And:
• “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey?” Romans 6:16

Every person is yielding to some influence. The question is: Who is controlling the life?

6. SEEK GODLY COUNSEL

God has not designed His people to function as isolated individuals.

• Proverbs 11:14 “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

There is safety in seeking counsel from mature, faithful Christians who themselves are established in Scripture. But there is an important qualification: Counsel must be tested by God's Word. The Bereans provide the proper example:

• Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

They listened. They considered. But they searched the Scriptures. Therefore, we should respect experienced and faithful brethren, while remembering that no human being is the final authority over conscience. The Word of God is the standard.

7. DO NOT ENTERTAIN THOSE WHO BRING DESTRUCTIVE ERROR

There is a difference between witnessing to someone and giving a platform to someone who is deliberately spreading error. John gives a serious warning:

• 2 John 1:10 “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:”

Why such caution? Because error is contagious. Paul warned:

• 1 Corinthians 15:33 “Evil communications corrupt good manners.”

We must therefore be careful about what we continually allow into our minds through: books; videos; sermons; podcasts; social media; conversations; teachers; websites; entertainment.
This is particularly important in the study of spiritualism. A person should not study occult or spiritualistic material merely out of curiosity and assume that he is immune to its influence. We do not need to drink poison in order to prove that we can resist it. Our responsibility is to guard the avenues of the soul.

8. KNOW THOSE WHO LABOUR AMONG YOU

The Bible does not teach God's people to follow every person who claims to be a teacher.

• 1 Thessalonians 5:12 says, “And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you.”

The word “know” carries the thought of recognizing or acknowledging those who faithfully labor among God's people. We should therefore examine the: doctrine, character, conduct, fruits, faithfulness, and influence of those who teach.

Christ gave the principle: “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:16 A powerful preacher is not necessarily a safe preacher. A gifted speaker is not necessarily a faithful teacher. A person who performs impressive things is not necessarily sent by God.
Christ warned: “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders.” Matthew 24:24
Therefore: Test the teaching. Test the spirit. Test the fruit. Test everything by the Word of God.

9. BE ESTABLISHED IN PRESENT TRUTH

A Christian who is continually moving from one new teaching to another is extremely vulnerable to deception. Peter wrote:
“Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.” 2 Peter 1:12

Notice the expression: “Established in the present truth.” We need an established foundation. We have a particularly important warning concerning the danger of allowing secondary or speculative subjects to displace the truths especially needed for the time:

“I saw the necessity of the messengers, especially, watching and checking all fanaticism wherever they might see it rise. Satan is pressing in on every side, and unless we watch for him, and have our eyes open to his devices and snares, and have on the whole armor of God, the fiery darts of the wicked will hit us. There are many precious truths contained in the Word of God, but it is “present truth” that the flock needs now. I have seen the danger of the messengers running off from the important points of present truth, to dwell upon subjects that are not calculated to unite the flock and sanctify the soul. Satan will here take every possible advantage to injure the cause.
But such subjects as the sanctuary, in connection with the 2300 days, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, are perfectly calculated to explain the past Advent movement and show what our present position is, establish the faith of the doubting, and give certainty to the glorious future. These, I have frequently seen, were the principal subjects on which the messengers should dwell.” Early Writings, p. 63

This is an important safeguard against spiritualism. Why? Because Satan wants to divert the mind. He can sometimes accomplish more by getting Christians endlessly occupied with peripheral subjects than by openly attacking the truth. We are warned that "Satan will here take every possible advantage to injure the cause.” Therefore, we must distinguish between: truth that establishes the faith and speculation that distracts the mind.

10. BEWARE OF SEDUCTIVE THEORIES

Paul gives the warning:
“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8

Notice the word: “Beware.” Paul does not say: “Listen to everything and accept whatever seems interesting.” He says: Beware. The danger is that false teaching can “spoil” a person. It can take something away. It can rob the mind of its foundation. It can replace Christ with philosophy. It can replace Scripture with tradition. It can replace obedience with human reasoning. It can replace truth with experience. Therefore, whenever a new teaching comes before us, we should ask: Does it exalt Christ? Does it agree with the whole Bible? Does it uphold God's law? Does it lead to holiness? Does it strengthen faith in the Word of God? Does it magnify the heavenly ministry of Christ? Does it produce obedience? Does it unite God's people around truth rather than speculation? Or does it divert the mind from the truths God has given?

THE GREAT SAFEGUARD

After all these safeguards are considered, we come back to one central principle: Our safety is in Christ, through faith, obedience, prayer, and the Word of God. Paul describes the Christian's protection as the whole armour of God:

• “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11

Then he identifies the armour:

• Truth - Ephesians 6:14
• Righteousness - Ephesians 6:14
• The gospel of peace - Ephesians 6:15
• Faith - Ephesians 6:16
• Salvation - Ephesians 6:17
• The Word of God - Ephesians 6:17
• Prayer - Ephesians 6:18

This is the divine answer to Satan's deception. Satan seeks to captivate the mind. Christ seeks to sanctify the mind. Satan seeks to lead us away from God's Word. Christ says: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17 Satan seeks independence from God. Christ calls us to abide in Him: “Without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5 Satan's deception leads to disobedience. Christ leads us to obedience: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15 Therefore, the ultimate safeguard against the spell of Satan is not merely knowing about Satan's methods. It is knowing Christ, trusting Christ, abiding in Christ, believing His Word, and obeying the truth He reveals. “For greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

WHAT TO DO WITH MAGICAL BOOKS

When a person discovers that something has been used to draw the mind away from God and toward Satan's kingdom, what should he do with it? The Bible gives us a powerful example in the experience of the believers at Ephesus.

1. BURN MAGICAL BOOKS

What did the converts at Ephesus do when they accepted Christ? The answer is found in Acts 19.

• Acts 19:18-19 “And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men.”

These people did not merely profess faith in Christ while continuing to retain the instruments of their former life. They confessed. They separated themselves from their former practices. And they destroyed the materials that had connected them with those practices.

“By burning their books on magic, the Ephesian converts showed that the things in which they had once delighted they now abhorred. It was by and through magic that they had especially offended God and imperiled their souls; and it was against magic that they showed such indignation. Thus they gave evidence of true conversion.” Review and Herald, September 7, 1911, par. 10

This is an important principle. True conversion does not merely change what a person believes; it changes what he is willing to retain. The Ephesians understood that these books were not spiritually neutral. It explains that:

“These treatises on divination contained rules and forms of communication with evil spirits. They were the regulations of the worship of Satan—directions for soliciting his help and obtaining information from him. By retaining these books the disciples would have exposed themselves to temptation; by selling them they would have placed temptation in the way of others. They had renounced the kingdom of darkness, and to destroy its power they did not hesitate at any sacrifice. Thus truth triumphed over men's prejudices and their love of money.” Review and Herald, September 7, 1911, par. 10

Notice the seriousness of the matter. The books were not merely "interesting literature." They contained material designed to connect people with the supernatural world apart from God. Therefore, retaining them would expose the believer to temptation. That gives us two principles. First: Do not retain what can become a snare to yourself. Second: Do not pass the snare on to somebody else. The Christian should not reason: "I will keep it but I won't use it." Nor should he say: "I don't need it anymore, but perhaps somebody else can use it." The Ephesians understood that if something belonged to the kingdom of darkness, it had no rightful place among those who had entered the kingdom of Christ.

THE COST OF THEIR SEPARATION

Their sacrifice was not insignificant. The value of the books was enormous.

“When the books had been consumed, they proceeded to reckon up the value of the sacrifice. It was estimated at fifty thousand pieces of silver.” Sketches from the Life of Paul, p. 137

They did not calculate: "How much money can we recover from these books?" They calculated: "How completely must we separate ourselves from our former life?" They valued their relationship with Christ more than the financial value of what they were surrendering. This is genuine conversion. Jesus said: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36 There are things that may have monetary value but spiritual liability. There are things that may be expensive but dangerous. There are things that may be intellectually interesting but spiritually poisonous. And there are things that a Christian must be willing to lose in order to preserve his relationship with Christ.

THE EPHESIANS DID NOT KEEP THEIR OLD MATERIALS

Here it describes the completeness of their separation:

“When the Ephesians were converted, they changed their habits and practices. Under the conviction of the Spirit of God, they acted with promptness, and laid bare all the mysteries of their witchcraft. They came and confessed, and showed their deeds, and their souls were filled with holy indignation because they had given such devotion to magic, and had so highly prized the books in which the rules of Satan's devising had laid down the methods whereby they might practice witchcraft. They were determined to turn from the service of the evil one, and they brought their costly volumes and publicly burned them. Thus they made manifest their sincerity in turning to God...
“The books the Ephesians committed to the flames on their conversion to the gospel, they formerly delighted in, and permitted them to rule their consciences and guide their minds. They might have sold them, but by so doing the evil would be perpetuated. They afterward abhorred the satanic mysteries, the magical arts, and regarded with aversion the knowledge they had obtained from them. I would ask the young who have been connected with the truth, Have you burned your magical books?” Youth's Instructor, November 16, 1893, par. 2, 5

Notice the sequence: Conversion leads to conviction, to confession, to separation, and to destruction of the evil materials. They did not postpone the matter. They did not negotiate with it. They did not preserve a few books "for reference." They acted. Why did they burn them instead of selling them? Because they understood that what had poisoned them could poison someone else. “They might have sold them, but by so doing the evil would be perpetuated.” That principle remains important. We should not transfer our spiritual danger to somebody else merely because we no longer want it. If something is spiritually destructive, destroying it is better than circulating it.

A QUESTION FOR THOSE WHO PROFESS CHRIST

Notice that it made the application very personal: “I would ask the young who have been connected with the truth, Have you burned your magical books?” That question can be broadened for our own examination: What have I allowed into my home that God would have me remove? What books? What magazines? What videos? What recordings? What websites? What teachings? What entertainment? What occult or spiritualistic material? What teachings that undermine the Bible? What material that continually feeds sinful desires? The question is not merely: "Is this entertaining?" The more important question is: "What influence does this exercise upon my mind?"

2. BURN THE LITERATURE THAT POISONS THE MIND

The principle does not apply only to books specifically labeled "magic." We are also warned concerning fictional literature that could exert a harmful influence:

“Parents would better burn the idle tales of the day and the novels as they come into their houses. It would be a mercy to the children. Encourage the reading of these storybooks, and it is like enchantment. It bewilders and poisons the mind.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 135

The issue is therefore larger than occult books. The Christian must consider what enters the mind.

The Bible gives us the principle:
1 Corinthians 15:33 “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”
Proverbs 4:23 “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

What we repeatedly see, hear, read, and contemplate has an influence upon our thoughts. And our thoughts influence our character.

THE CHRISTIAN HOME MUST HAVE A STANDARD

This is particularly important for the Christian home. Parents should not merely ask: "Is this popular?" "Does everyone watch it?" "Is it funny?" "Is it only fiction?" "Is there only a little witchcraft in it?" "Is there only a little profanity?" "Does everybody else have it?" The better question is: Does this help establish Christ in the mind, or does it make Satan's kingdom familiar? The Bible says: “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” Psalm 101:3 And Paul gives the Christian a positive standard: “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; ... think on these things.” Philippians 4:8 The Christian does not merely empty the mind. He replaces what is evil with what is holy.

WHAT ABOUT MODERN MEDIA?

The Ephesians had books. Today we have far more powerful means of communication. We have: books and magazines, videos, movies, television programs, recordings, podcasts, websites, social media, online teachers, sermons, documentaries, games, music, and countless forms of digital entertainment. The technology has changed. The principle has not changed. If the material deliberately teaches or promotes occultism, witchcraft, spirit communication, divination, necromancy, astrology, demon communion, or doctrines that lead the mind away from God's Word, the Christian should not treat it casually.

Paul says: “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Ephesians 5:11
We should not invite darkness into our minds and homes and then expect to remain spiritually unaffected.

THE PASSOVER PRINCIPLE: PURGING OUT THE LEAVEN

There is also a powerful biblical parallel in the Passover.

• Paul writes: “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened.” 1 Corinthians 5:7

Then he explains the spiritual application:

• “Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” 1 Corinthians 5:8

The literal leaven illustrates the principle of putting away what is corrupting. Likewise, Jesus warned:

• “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” Matthew 16:6

The disciples initially thought Christ was talking about literal bread. But Jesus explained:

• “Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” Matthew 16:12

Therefore, the biblical principle is broader than physical objects. We must purge both corrupting things and corrupting teachings from our lives.

THE REAL ISSUE IS NOT THE BOOK-IT IS THE INFLUENCE

We should be careful not to make the lesson merely: "Burn bad books." The deeper lesson is: Remove whatever deliberately places your mind under an influence contrary to God's Word. The Ephesians did not burn their books because fire itself possessed spiritual power. They burned them because they had recognized what those books represented. They were renouncing their former allegiance. Their actions testified: "We belong to Christ now." This is why their experience is so powerful. Their conversion was not merely intellectual. It was practical. Their repentance affected their possessions. Their repentance affected their habits. Their repentance affected their homes. Their repentance affected what they were willing to read. Their repentance affected what they were willing to keep.

A MODERN APPLICATION: DO NOT PRESERVE WHAT GOD HAS TOLD YOU TO REMOVE

There is a danger in saying: "I know this is wrong, but I am keeping it just in case." That is not complete separation. If God has convicted us that something is spiritually harmful, we should not argue with the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Remember Eve. Satanic's first strategy was to get her to listen. Then to reason. Then to doubt. Then to disobey. Therefore, the safest course is not to place ourselves unnecessarily where temptation can gain an advantage. Paul says: “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22 And James says: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 Sometimes resisting the devil means praying. Sometimes it means refusing a temptation. Sometimes it means walking away. And sometimes it means throwing something away.

THE EPHESIAN PRINCIPLE OF TRUE CONVERSION

The story in Acts 19 gives us a beautiful picture of genuine revival. Notice what happened: They heard the Word. They believed. They confessed. They forsook their former practices. They destroyed the materials associated with those practices. And the Word of God prevailed. “So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.” Acts 19:20 That is the goal. Not merely the destruction of books. Not merely the removal of objects. Not merely cleaning out a house. The goal is that the Word of God might prevail in the heart. When God's Word prevails, Satan's influence loses its place. When Christ fills the mind, there is less room for the enemy. When truth replaces error, deception loses its power. When holiness replaces worldliness, the spell of the enemy is broken.

A FINAL APPEAL

The question today is not merely: "What should I burn?" The deeper question is: "What am I still holding that is keeping me connected to the kingdom I claim to have left?" The Ephesians did not say: "These books are expensive." They did not say: "Perhaps someday I will need them." They did not say: "I can keep them and simply promise not to use them." They brought them together. They burned them. And heaven recorded their action as evidence of genuine conversion. The same principle applies to us. If something continually draws our minds away from Christ, weakens our reverence for God's Word, normalizes sin, promotes spiritualistic ideas, or feeds the very tendencies from which Christ is calling us to separate, we should not cherish it simply because it is valuable, popular, entertaining, or difficult to surrender. Jesus asks for the whole heart. “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15 And Paul gives us the final principle: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 The battlefield is the mind. The issue is influence. The choice is between two kingdoms. And the safest place for the mind is beneath the authority of the Word of God and under the protection of Jesus Christ. Let us therefore remove every connection with darkness that God has convicted us to surrender, and let the Word of God dwell in us richly. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

DUTIES OF THE CHURCH

The battle against spiritual deception is not merely an individual matter. It is also a responsibility of the church. God has entrusted His people with sacred truth. Therefore, the church must not only proclaim the truth-it must also guard the flock from teachings that would destroy faith, weaken obedience, and separate souls from Christ. Paul warned the elders of Ephesus:

• “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers.” Acts 20:28

The shepherd has a responsibility both to feed the sheep and to protect the sheep. Jesus Himself warned:

• “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” Matthew 7:15

Therefore, the church must know how to recognize error, how to deal with false teachers, and how to preserve the unity and purity of the faith.

1. DO NOT RECEIVE FALSE TEACHERS

John gave the church a very direct warning:

• “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed.” 2 John 1:10

This does not teach us to hate people. Rather, it teaches us not to give spiritual legitimacy or support to false teaching.

“We are not to receive the words of those who come with a message that contradicts the special points of our faith. They gather together a mass of Scripture, and pile it as proof around their asserted theories. This has been done over and over again during the past fifty years.” Letter 329, 1905 (2SM 161)

Notice what false teachers often do. They may quote Scripture. They may have impressive arguments. They may present many Bible texts. But the issue is not simply: “Did they quote Scripture?” The question is: “What doctrine are they building from those Scriptures?” Satan quoted Scripture to Christ. Therefore, the mere use of Bible verses does not prove that a teaching is biblical. The Bereans were commended because: “They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11 The church must therefore test every teaching by the Word of God.

2. DO NOT ALLOW ENEMIES OF TRUTH TO GAIN OUR FRIENDSHIP AND SYMPATHY

There is a danger in becoming so sympathetic toward individuals that we become careless regarding the principles they are undermining.

“Should we allow our enemies to gain our friendship and sympathy, and thereby allure us from our post of duty; should we by any unguarded act, expose the cause of God to reproach, and thus weaken the hands of the workers, we should bring upon our characters a stain not easily removed, and place a serious obstacle in the way of our own future usefulness.” Signs of the Times, January 3, 1884, par. 13

This is where Nehemiah provides a powerful example. When his enemies wanted to draw him away from the work, they repeatedly called him to come down. Nehemiah answered:

• “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?” Nehemiah 6:3

That should be the attitude of God's workers today. There are times when the enemy does not try to destroy the work by attacking it directly. He simply tries to distract the workers from the work. He wants them to come down from the wall. He wants them occupied with controversy. He wants them distracted by personalities. He wants them spending their strength on arguments that accomplish little. Nehemiah recognized the strategy. “I am doing a great work.” The church today must likewise recognize that its primary mission is the proclamation of the everlasting gospel.

3. DO NOT GIVE FALSE TEACHERS A PLACE OF INFLUENCE

The church must distinguish between loving a person and endorsing his teaching.

• Ephesians 5:11 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

The Testimonies addressed this principle in very strong language:
“Some receive a part of the message, and reject another portion. Some accept the Sabbath and reject the third angel's message; yet because they have received the Sabbath they claim the fellowship of those who believe all the present truth. Then they labor to bring others into the same dark position with themselves. They are not responsible to anyone. They have an independent faith of their own. Such are allowed to have influence, when no place should be given to them, notwithstanding their pretensions to honesty.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1, p. 326

The lesson is important: A person's sincerity does not automatically make his teaching safe. A person may be sincere and still be sincerely wrong. A person may have some truth and still introduce destructive error. A person may possess one important doctrine and use that doctrine as a platform from which to undermine another. Therefore, the question is not merely: “Does this person believe some truth?” The question is: “Does his teaching agree with the whole counsel of God?”

4. GIVE REBUKE AND WARNING WHEN NECESSARY

Biblical love does not mean silence in the presence of danger. Sometimes love must warn. Sometimes love must rebuke. Sometimes love must say: “This teaching is dangerous.”

“Of the rebuke that is love, of the blow that wounds to heal, of the warning that speaks hope, they have need to learn.” Education, p. 90

The purpose of biblical rebuke is not humiliation. It is restoration. Paul instructed:

• 1 Timothy 5:20 “Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.”
• 2 Timothy 4:2 “Reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

Notice the balance: Reprove. Rebuke. Exhort. But do it with: “all longsuffering and doctrine.” Biblical correction must never become personal vindictiveness. We do not attack people because we dislike them. We expose error because souls are at stake.

5. CONDEMN WHAT GOD CONDEMNS

The Christian must learn to distinguish between human opinions and God's revealed judgment.

“There is many a man in the humble walks of life today whom the Lord might designate as He did Abraham: ‘The friend of God.’ Such men approve that which God approves and condemn that which He condemns.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 615

This is an important principle. We should not condemn something merely because we personally dislike it. Neither should we approve something merely because society approves it. Our standard must be: What does God say? Isaiah gives the warning:

• Isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”

The church must never reverse God's moral categories. If God calls something sin, the church cannot call it righteousness. If God calls something error, the church cannot call it truth. If God calls something dangerous, the church cannot make it safe by popularizing it.

6. DO NOT FEAR TO PREACH THE GOSPEL BECAUSE IT MAY OFFEND

One of Satan's most effective weapons is the fear of man. The preacher begins asking: "Will people be offended?" "Will they leave?" "Will they criticize me?" "Will they call me extreme?" "Will I lose friends?" "Will people accuse me of being unloving?" And eventually the message becomes softer than the Word of God. But Paul said:

• “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men?” Galatians 1:10

The Spirit of Prophecy recounts Luther's response:

“It is impossible to preach the gospel of Christ without offense. Why, then, should the fear of danger separate me from the Lord and that divine word which alone is truth? No; I would rather give up my body, my blood, and my life.” Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 139

The gospel is good news. But the gospel also exposes sin. The truth comforts the repentant sinner while disturbing the sinner who refuses repentance. Therefore: We must never deliberately make the gospel offensive—but neither should we make the gospel less truthful in order to prevent offense. Christ Himself said:

• “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

7. ESTABLISH GOSPEL ORDER

This is one of the most important principles in the entire section.

“I saw that this door at which the enemy comes in to perplex and trouble the flock can be shut. I inquired of the angel how it could be closed. He said, ‘The church must flee to God's Word and become established upon gospel order, which has been overlooked and neglected.’” Early Writings, p. 100

Why is gospel order necessary? Because confusion creates an opening for deception. When everyone becomes his own authority... When every person establishes his own doctrine... When every person refuses accountability... When there is no biblical order... When false teachers are permitted to circulate freely... The flock becomes vulnerable. God is not the author of confusion.

• 1 Corinthians 14:33 “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”
• 1 Corinthians 14:40 “Let all things be done decently and in order.”

But there is an important distinction. Gospel order does not mean placing human authority above Scripture. The Word of God remains the supreme standard. True gospel order brings the church under the authority of Christ and His Word.

CHRIST IS THE TRUE DOOR

There is an important connection here. The church must close the door to error—but Christ Himself is the Door into salvation. Jesus said:

• “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved.” John 10:9

Therefore, the church's safeguards must never become a substitute for Christ. We do not protect the flock by human control. We protect the flock by bringing the flock to Jesus Christ and His Word.

“Christ is the complete system of truth. He says, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.’ All true believers center in Christ, their character is irradiated by Christ; all meet in Christ, and circulate about Christ.” Manuscript 34, 1894 (3SM 199)

This is the centre of the entire study. Christ is not merely one doctrine among many. Christ is the centre around which every true doctrine must revolve.

THE TEST OF TRUE FAITH

“In him is the complete system of divine truth. The salvation of the soul, through faith in Christ, is the ground and pillar of the truth. Those who exercise true faith in Christ make it manifest by holiness of character, by obedience to the law of God.” Review and Herald, September 17, 1895, par. 8

Therefore, we must reject two opposite errors. Error number one: Salvation by human works. Error number two: A profession of faith that produces no obedience. Biblical faith produces transformation.

• John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
• 1 John 2:3 “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”

The church must therefore keep Christ at the centre while upholding the truth He has revealed.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SPIRITUALISTIC THEORIES ARE RETAINED?

The warning is solemn:
“Those who continue to hold these spiritualistic theories will surely spoil their Christian experience, sever their connection with God, and lose eternal life.” Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 292

This is why the church cannot treat spiritualistic theories as harmless intellectual differences. The issue is not merely: "I have a different opinion." If a theory undermines:

• the authority of Scripture,
• the law of God,
• the atonement,
• the sanctuary,
• Christ's mediatorial work,
• the distinction between truth and error,
• the reality of sin,
• or the necessity of obedience,

then the consequences are spiritual. Error can sever the connection between the soul and God.

STAND UPON THE PLATFORM OF ETERNAL TRUTH

What, then, should the church do? Stand. Not on human theories. Not on personalities. Not on popularity. Not on institutional reputation. Not on intellectual fashion.
But upon: THE PLATFORM OF ETERNAL TRUTH.

“The Lord desires us to realize that it is of great importance that we stand in these last days upon the platform of eternal truth. Those who think that the church militant is the church triumphant make a great mistake. The church militant will gain great triumphs, but it will also have fierce conflicts with evil that it may be firmly established upon the platform of eternal truth. And every one of us should be determined to stand with the church upon this platform. ” Manuscript 46, May 18, 1904 (UL 152)

So we are warned against confusing the church militant with the church triumphant. The church militant will experience conflict. It will have struggles. It will encounter error. It will face opposition. But through those conflicts it must become firmly established upon eternal truth. Therefore, the existence of conflict does not necessarily mean that God's work has failed. The question is: What position does the church take in the conflict? Does it compromise with error? Or does it stand upon the truth?

GOD'S ASSURANCE TO HIS MESSENGERS

Those who faithfully warn against deception may themselves become targets of criticism. But God gives this encouragement:

“Be not afraid of men, for My shield will protect you. It is not you that speaketh; it is the Lord that giveth the messages of warning and reproof. Never deviate from the truth under any circumstances.” Manuscript 63, May 26, 1906 (UL 160)

That does not mean that every person who claims to speak for God is automatically correct. Every message must still be tested by Scripture. But when God has clearly revealed truth, His servants must not abandon it merely because people oppose it.

• Acts 4:20 says, “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

THE CHURCH MUST GUARD THE FLOCK-BUT CHRIST MUST REMAIN THE HEAD

We can now see the proper balance. The church must: Reject false teaching. Guard the flock. Refuse to give error a platform. Warn against deception. Reprove sin. Maintain gospel order. Stand upon eternal truth. But the church must never become the substitute for Christ. Jesus remains: The Head. The Shepherd. The Door. The Way. The Truth. The Life.

• Colossians 1:18 declares: “And he is the head of the body, the church.”

Therefore, the church is safest when it is closest to Christ. And the church is most vulnerable when it replaces Christ's authority with human authority.

FINAL APPEAL: WATCH THE DOOR

At the beginning of this study, we saw that Satan seeks access to the human mind. Now we see that he also seeks access to the church.

He seeks entrance through:

• false teachers,
• seductive theories,
• spiritualistic doctrines,
• fanaticism,
• independent teachings,
• confusion,
• compromise,
• worldly friendships,
• unauthorized influences,
• and disregard for gospel order.

But God has provided a safeguard. “The church must flee to God's Word.” That is the answer. Not merely human wisdom. Not merely organizational authority. Not merely theological education. Not merely tradition. The church must flee to the Word of God and to Jesus Christ, the Living Word. And the final question is therefore not simply: “Who is teaching?” It is: “What is being taught?” Not: “How impressive is the messenger?” But: “Does the message agree with the Word of God?” Not: “How many people believe it?” But: “What saith the Scripture?” And not: “Will accepting this teaching make us more popular?” But: “Will accepting this teaching bring us closer to Jesus Christ, His truth, His law, and His righteousness?”

• The apostle gives us the standard:
  “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21

• And Isaiah gives the final test:
  “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20

Therefore, let the church stand. Let it stand in Christ. Let it stand upon the Word. Let it stand upon eternal truth. Let it stand in gospel order. Let it lovingly warn the wandering. Let it protect the flock from wolves. And above everything else: Let Jesus Christ remain the Head. For if Christ is the Head, His Word is our standard, His Spirit is our guide, His law is our rule of life, and His righteousness is our only hope.

• 1 Corinthians 3:11 “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

CONCLUSIONS

JESUS CHRIST IS OUR ONLY SAFETY-LET US BEHOLD HIM!

After studying Satan’s deceptions, spiritualism, false teachers, and false theories, we must remember one central truth: Our safety is not merely knowing Satan’s methods-it is knowing, trusting, following, and beholding Jesus Christ. Satan seeks to turn the mind away from Christ through error, deception, false miracles, worldly influences, and spiritualistic ideas. But we have given the safeguard:

“There is one safeguard against Satan’s deceptions and snares-that is the truth as it is in Jesus. The truth planted in the heart, nourished by watchfulness and prayer, nourished by the grace of Christ, will give us discernment. The truth must abide in the heart, be felt in its power in spite of all the alluring enchantments of Satan, and your experience and mine must be that the truth can purify, guide, and bless the soul.” Letter 17, December 1, 1886 (UL 349)

Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” John 14:6

Therefore, we must test every teaching, teacher, experience, and doctrine by the Word of God.

“Christ's ministry is to be the ministry of His followers. To branch off into spiritualistic ideas is to depart from the faith, giving heed to doctrines of deception. The messages that God has given through His servant John are now to be proclaimed as of special importance. This is our work--to revive the sacred truths that called us out from the world and made us what we are. We are not to yield up one feature of the faith, but are to hold our confidence firm unto the end. We are to give no place to doctrines that are not in harmony with the truth for this time.” Letter 270, December 21, 1903

The truth must not merely be in our minds-it must abide in our hearts and transform our lives.

Jesus said: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32

The final test is therefore not merely, “Can I recognize Satan’s spell?” but: “Am I abiding in Christ?” Jesus said: “Abide in me, and I in you.” John 15:4

As we behold Christ, His character is reproduced in us:

• “We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

Christ leads us to obedience:

• “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

And the final generation is described as:

• “Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12

Therefore:
Test every teaching.
Test every spirit.
Test every doctrine.
Test every teacher.
But above all-BEHOLD JESUS.
He is our Saviour, High Priest, Advocate, Teacher, Example, Righteousness, Life, and Truth.
Jesus Christ is our only safety.
Let us behold Him. Let us follow Him. Let us abide in Him.
